I've long been a fan of planted tanks and today i have finally decided to take the plunge. I already have a 1ft crystal glass cube tank at home just screaming to be set up and i'm about to oblige. As with all my tanks, the filter is always my top priority as it is with most of you i'm sure. I'm thinking of going for a Fluval 103 which is rated at 390L/H and has a filtering volume 1.095L(if i'm not mistaken). Also looking at a 2213. I would like to get some opinions and views on which you would use/are using now. Thanks!

Personally i prefer OHF, but i have not seen OHF for 1ft tanks before. Cleaning OHF is much easier compared to canister.

However, 2nd in line would be canister as it is really quiet and gets the job done.
3rd would be Hang on filter
    4th - Internal filter ( 1ft is already small, having 1 makes it even smaller !! )
    5th - sponge / corner filter

Eheim 2213 would be a great choice for your planted tank

Thank you for your replies! I've actually decided to use a 2215 although i might downgrade if i find the currents generated too strong for my future Corys. Currently have a 2215 on my 2 footer and it's pretty good, hence the investment into another set albeit 2nd hand. I also recently bought three 7.5x7.5x9 tanks to try out as well. All 3 will be filtered with HOF of at least 400L/H flow rates.

Why do you want to downgrade to a smaller tank when you have a 2 footer to work on ?

I want to try with a smaller tank first. Plus i prefer how the cube looks aesthetically compared to the 2x1x1. But recently i've been reading up and have considered scraping everything and jumping straight to my 4x2x2. What are you using for your own cube?

I do not have a cube tank, i used to have 2ft tanks and 1ft tanks. However, i just upgraded my tank to 3ft tanks. And will be clearing my 2ft tanks soon. I found that working with bigger tanks are much easier and have much room for innovation. You can actually dump alot of stuff inside, no need to think so much Driftwood, Fish, Plants, Filter etc etc

And you realise your fish has much more space to move rather than moving back and forth. The biggest fish in my tank is a pair of cowheads which is about 4". They swim very freely in a 3ft tank with 50 tetras and a pleco

You're poisoning me my friend! Now i don't know what to do! I'm picking up my 2nd 2215 tomorrow. Should i hook up both to the 2 footer or sell the 2 footer and go for a 3 footer. DILEMMA-IN-PROGRESS.

Re: Your preferred filter for a 1ft cube tank?

This boils down to space contraint and budget

Looking that you are using 2x Eheim 2215, i think budget should not be a problem, is just whether you have space, hahas. Using 2x Eheim 2215 is kind of over filtration, nonetheless, overfiltration is better than under.

For myself, 3 feet tanks are just about the right size if you have space because firstly, it can fit into a car. Secondly, it provides enough space for your fish to swim around and space for decoration

Both 2215s are 2nd hand so i'm not that well-financed, i just prefer using reliable brands like Eheim, Fluval or the Hagen-series HOFs. I think i'll still stick with my cube and 7.5x7.5x9" tanks for now. Slowly make my way up. Thanks buddy!

Never limit yourself on account of finance. If you do not have enough of it, you could saved up for it. It will take a longer time but you could spend that time planning for what you want to have the way you want it. Don't just rush in into something, there's always what if. Proper planning is essential and this hobby is not a race.

    Hope this helps!

Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.

I did consider getting an Aquaclear Hagen 50 which has a flow rate of about 750L/H, more than my 2215. But they cost $68 brand new and definitely don't hold as much media as a 2215, not to mention any future resale value. I prefer not to use cheap HOFs. I just got a Rio HOF yesterday and it works brilliantly for my 7.5x7.5x9 tank. I do agree that HOFs look good, especially if you get the better designed ones. But nothing beats a canister in my opinion.

Words of a wise man! Definitely sir, i'm saving up while at the same time making do with what i have. Currently on internship so reading up as much as possible and asking around because at the moment i do not have the time to travel around the island buying stuff from LFS. Finally understand how important weekends are to working adults. But right now i've already set up most of my small tanks bar the 1ft cube as i want to cycle them in advance. As for the cube.. can't seem to find piping for the Eheim canister. Thanks once again Rohaizal!

I personally only use Eheim, Rio or Fluval products. My 2 footer uses an Eheim 2215. It's been doing a good job.
