I'm setting up a 2ft tank planted for keeping some sakura and cherries. After planting and started the system, I realized that there is a very thin film of oily like substance on the surface. I need advice on how to remove the oily film if I'm not using a surface skimmer?? I'm using atman df 500 for filtration and the tank is 2x1x1.5, media: Mr Aqua s size ceramic rings and biohomme plus. Soil is using red pack gex around 17L. Need advice on how to remove the film of oil.

just create some surface irritation and the oily surface will clear.

Bro Eviltrain, I'm currently using the current of the rainbar to create the irritation you were advising, may I know how long before it'll clear?? Or is there any form of chemical to use for expediting the process??

dont need to mind that, that oily substance is actually some form of bacteria. it will disappear very fast one. there is another method, using air stone ( connected to a air pump )to break the oily surface up.

Use to happen in my tank too. Agree with eviltrain method. Just use a air stone with air pump will eventually break up the oily surface.

About how long does it take to clear away? I planning to put shrimps inside but seeing the oily surface i dare not do anything except to wait.

if you use the air pump method, it will clear in less than 2 days. don't need to worry so much. as long as the water parameter if good to go, you can add shrimps.

Usually the oil comes when you use new canister / filter. For me, it just took a day to clear ~ Hope all is goes well for you

Both the soil (half) and the canister are all new. I guess just have to wait with more patience for it to clear then. Currently, using rainbar and the air bubble method to speed up the clearing of the film.
