preparation of 2nd hand filter

Just bought a 2nd hand filter, how to prepare it for my tank?

The existing filter (and media) might contain foreign bacteria that might be present in the x-owner tank. Fishes in the tank might be immune to them. But my fish might not...

What to do? soak the filter media in Melafix, salt, anti-biotics? how about Boiling water?

Need some constructive suggestions... Thanks

should be generally safe, but you can try hydrogen peroxide.
or mild bleach then rinse it really thoroughly with anti chlorine.
