    Rant On Sellers

I am somewhat miffed at some sellers who, for example, bought an accessory from an LFS at $90 and found it was not suitable for his use and offer to sell at $80 in AQ.

Does it make sense for any member to want to buy a 2nd hand item when he can buy at the nearest LFS for same price of $90 or maybe lower? Will he take the trouble to travel all the way to Jurong East where the seller stays when he is loacted in Marine Parade just to save that $10? Some sellers never think that the buyer has to spend time, expenses and the trouble to buy their item. What if the accessory was not acceptable after purchase it broke down?

    Re: Rant On Sellers

I guess it is "to each his own". To some, $10 is no big deal, to some it is a lot. And there are way too many variables in this discussion.

He could be staying in Jurong but if he visits a friend in Marine parade at the point when the seller list the item, then why not?

In summary, sellers should not need to consider any buyers convenience, buyers should be wise enough to decide what is best for himself or herself.

    My 2 cents.

Don't forget, the seller also incurred cost going to the shop to buy the item. If the item was only available in a shop on the other side of the island, wouldn't the he/she also have to consider whether it's worthwhile travelling all the way there? Or if the item is sold at a discount only at that shop way across the island, wouldn't he/she also weigh the saving of going all the way there?

What if he travelled across the island to buy the item and then the buyer is his neighbour? Should he charge the travel costs to the neighbour?

The seller states the price, buyers decide if it's worth his/her while. For all you know, there's a guy living a few blocks from him who figures $10 saving on an item that is barely used is worthwhile.

What if the product is broken? This is why there is this Latin term "caveat emptor" or in English "let the buyer beware". It basically means it is the buyer's responsibility to make sure that the item he/she is buying is in acceptable working condition before paying for it. If the buyer does not bother to check and discovers it's not working when he/she reaches home, too bad. The only exception is if the buyer can prove that the seller intentionally hid or prevented the discovery of the damage/flaw/etc.

ALWAYS check/test the item and make sure you are satisfied before you pay up. Don't just take the persons word for it. Many second hand items are usually old items, it may be working 1 week before the transaction when the seller tested it. But the item might break during the time between then and the time the buyer picks it up. Anything can breakdown at any time for any number of reasons... when was the last time you predicted that something you owned breakdown. They just break when time is up. Even, if it is a really good friend, or someone who enjoys a good reputation on the forum... for the sake of a clear-cut transaction, test the item in the presence of both parties. If the item cannot be tested on the spot, for example a chiller, arrange for a mutually agreeable party to service and test the item in both parties' presence.

From the seller's point of view, anything can happen on the buyer's trip home. Buyer could have dropped it and an unseen wire came loose or a fragile part broke. Someone could have bumped into the item when the buyer was making his way home. Or maybe just wear and tear. Maybe an unscrupulous buyer intentional broke the item so he can return it and get his money back. So it is also in the interest of the seller to let the buyer check/test the item before he/she pays for it and leaves.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

    Re: Rant On Sellers

hee hee, maybe someone who stays near the seller would be very happy to get the item at 10 dollar lesser?

Who knows, you might have something on at Jurong and you can go there to pick it up without going to the LFS?

Some buyers don't know that the seller might have bought the item from east side LFS and bring all the way back to his location in Jurong East.

    nothing to miff about la.

Whats your beef? Not every second hand item gets sold off at half price. If price is not right you also won't buy. So it's not like a big problem. Fellow forummers have a right to sell their stuff at the price they want to. Market forces will decide if the item gets sold or not.

    Re: Rant On Sellers

Well give and take if you were to rant than i think you just take a look at a few or i myself have shortlist a few seller...... Buy and sell at the same price which the lfs is selling. Maybe during that time they buy were brand new and at a higher cost. But if they at least bother to update a little they would have know the lfs have drop the price of the item. To seller he think is reasonable but for buyer if he can have easy access to lfs then he will think it is crazy.

I quote example i quote okie "I want to buy a 2ft stand now you go lfs ask range between 60-50" Seller who is selling a use stand now 50 (but 2 yrs ago he bought maybe 60-70) To him it is reasonable cause he selling it 10-20 lesser already without checking the current price. Well buyer might think otherwise.... I know i did read a post in market recently a forumer comment another forumer selling his tank at lfs price now brand new..........

So i think nothing to rant about .... well frankly if you think the price for 2nd hand is not what you expect you can either wait or go to a lfs to get a brand new one.

So does it mean that when I buy my air sponge filter at $3.50 then I sell at $2 is wrong?

It's only $1.50 lower then the original price I bought. Then I should just give away free? But when we give stuff away free, takers always take it for granted and some even request to ask for delivery (for free)..

There isn't really much to rant about when it's suppose to be a 'happy buyer, happy seller' issue when someone wants to get from the marketplace.. If there is so much things in the heart, then get brand new.. Lessons learnt..

Erm.. Did I go out of point? Hahahahahahaha..

    Re: Rant On Sellers

The problem is with newbie. When I was just started, I bought very old 2ft 15W light for $15. The seller told me that 15W is enough to grow any plants. As beginner and do not know anything, I just trust the seller. Two month later I saw the same light model, brand new for only $15. The worst part is you can only grow limited plant species with 15W. Basically its a waste of money.

At that time I really wish that moderator check/warn if the asking price not reasonable but I guess it not possible because the price between each shop sometime can be substantially different. Eheim 2213 for example, some shop selling it at $80, other shop selling it at $100.

Unfortunately there is not much that moderator can do, except keep remind people to check the price and check the stuff before buying.

OT a bit, do you guys notice that now a days many of the stuff does not come with warranty, especially those china brand like Aquazonic, Sunsun, etc. Some shop like NA is nice enough to give you 1 month warranty, although 1 month is pretty much nothing.

    Re: Rant On Sellers

Apparently many here do not see my point which is, unless the buyer lives very close by, there really is no reason to buy something which is common from someone who you don't know just to save a few dollars. My rant is on sellers who seemed to be unaware how a business should be transacted by pricing a 2nd hand item at slightly below his cost. Those who commented therefore agree that the seller is right and is willing to pay a few dollars to transport the item home.

For the sake of a few dollars savings, you all do not take into account that it is not brand new, there is a risk of the item not working and you do not know the seller. Why do that when you can go to your local LFS, checked the brand new item and that it is working before paying the full price of $90. You can also politely ask for a discount if you know your LFS people well enough.

My rant is on sellers who should know better, not on the buyers who should do their sums and are careful not to be scammed. Also on the comment that I expect a 40%/50% discount, that is not the point. Neither also the comment on an item worth $3.50. Would you advertise a sale of one item worth $3.50? Is that not ridiculous?

Windsor, Windsor, I have a suggestion for you, why don't you go to marketplace and whenever you see someone interested in buying a second item, STOP THEM and give them your best philosophical theory of getting brand new for a couple more bucks from LFS.

Cheers..in life there is more to getting miffed over the smallest of matters.

    Re: Rant On Sellers

Windsor.. are you saying then that shops should be monitored at what prices they are allowed to sell their items?

As far as any business transactions are concerned, the seller does not have to give two hoots about the buyer's problems and restrictions. Can you imagine? So if I was to sell diapers for example.. do I have to take into consideration the travel cost of all my customers no matter where they live? Then also take into account their financial situation and whether or not they have 2 or 3 kids, then think if the price will be affordable to them? Please la.

I think you're the one missing the point. To a seller's point of view it's simple. I'm going to sell it at this price. If no one buys, then I'll lower my price. Everything else becomes a moot point. You're trying to preach a point that sellers should be more responsible in researching their target audience in an attempt to garner better sales. But your real motive is probably the fact that you wanted to buy something 2nd hand to save money, but frustrated that the seller isn't selling at a price that you BELIEVE should be the selling price based on your locale against your seller. Like that then you want the seller to have tiered pricing? If you live <1km, the price is X - $5, if you love <10km the price is X - $10, if you live <20km the price is X - $20, then if you live in JB should just mail you the product for free and include some cash since the trip from JB to Singapore will probably cost more than the product.

    Wah lau, are you serious?

It's the BUYER'S responsibility to ensure that the price that they're paying for the product is the right price. If not, then just don't buy la. Wait for a better deal or for someone to sell the same item that lives closer to you.

    I can't believe we're actually discussing this....

    Re: Rant On Sellers

As a reply to Shadow, it's the same case though don't you think?

If you were to go to Sim Lim Square, and someone peddled you a phone and explained how amazing it was and quoted you a price of $500 (for example). He explain to you that this is a very good price. You believe his words and buys it only to realise that 2 floors up another shop is selling for $450.

Are you going to call the Police to monitor the pricing of all the shops in SLS to ensure that they are selling at a price reasonable to a customer based on the customer's perception of acceptable?

There goes competitive advantage man. There are people who are willing to risk having less sales (maybe due to the fact that they have limited quantity) and garner more profit per sale. Then there are people who are completely overstocked and decide to sell at a lower price in order to clear his stock.

There are various reasons as to why people decide on their pricing. It is therefore unfathomable that the buyer should decide what the price should be unless it is to decide not to purchase the item. It has been, is, and will forever be the buyer's responsibility to ensure that the price he pays for a product is that of his expectation. If a seller is really stupid enough to price himself out of a profitable market, then it will be him who suffer.. not the potential buyers. That's because no one will buy unless they're super rich and the money is irrelevant to them.. in which case the point is moot isn't it?

Buying something, anything.. no matter what it is, is always about evaluating a product against your perceived value. If they don't match, you don't buy. If they do, then so what if a shop is selling less? You decided on your own at the point of purchase that the product and your perceived value of it matched comfortably enough for you to part with your money. After that, it's just your reaction over missing out on a better deal.

As far as I know, only one company has ever given money back over perception of value. And that's Apple. They did it for customers who purchased iPods at the full price only for it to be reduced by 40% the following day or so due to a new product launch. And just so you know.. they are no longer doing that.

That exactly, you can't. The only thing you can do is to educate people to check the price around as well as to check the good before you buy.
