not particularly certain. perhaps its referring to water flow.

Was reading Dennerle's "Algae Problems? We solved it long ago" booklet and I'm puzzled by something.
It says:
1) In a 200L aquarium where 400L/hr is filtered => tendency to alage
2) In a 200L aquarium where 150L/hr is filtered => no tendency to alage
How can overfiltration lead to alage problems?
not particularly certain. perhaps its referring to water flow.

this is the same booklet I was referring to that claims high filtration rate leads to algae.
on the other hand, my tank that was just scrubbed clean yesterday, has developed SIGNIFANT amount of green spot algae at the filter outlet, you can see the shape of the algae patch which is where water comes out of the hose and rushes against the glass.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

Choy,
I have the same experience as well. Sometime it is not neccessary that we have all the answer. Sometime we just know if you do A, then B will happen, not neccessary knowing why A cause B. Just like this case.
Have learned from others and Dennerle booklet... excessive water agitation can cause algae....like rain bar, power head outlet etc...which all proven true...ubut I don't know the chemistry/mechanism

I notice that too.
The outlet of my reactor is pointed towards the glass to minimise water turbulence and I always notice spot alage growing there.

I too experienced algae growth the most densed in the high flow (near filter outlet) during the BBA attack in my tank. I think wat it meant is not over filtration but flow rate too high.

Another thing, when I pointed my reactor towards my plants beard alage started to grown on them.

I had fully cycled my 3 ft tank about 1.5 months ago. It is not I wish any algae attack, I hardly saw any algae in my tank (touch wood).
I only saw few small little on the lower front part of the tank , where I was experimenting on direct shining 2x24w PL at the lower front at the BJ, riccia, Glosso and other plants. Within 2 hrs , the plants started bubbles. I guessed the algae formed was due to condensation or some sort.
My canister filter has pump output of 1200L/H, filter circulation of 650L/H . I am using a rain bar and blastering onto the back glass . I can the strong flow of water circulating upward from the top and the plants from back and bending forward. So far I have not seen algae form the rain bar area also []
.
Cheers

Neon,
Still too early to tell..anyway wish your luck..

Could it be because the water outlet has more oxygen which is good for algae. I heard CO2 would reduce algae so I guess too much oxygen would cause algae.
Just my two cents![]()
