Intend to use ADA aquasoil amazonia for my new 3feet setup, however heard that amazonia type will cause the pH to be acidic.
My question is if i use other types of aquasoil like malayan type, will the water pH be affected also?
Secondly, also heard feedback from some users that aquasoil will slowly break down to form muddy particles.
Lastly, is it advisable to use a layer of base fert even though i use aquasoil?

I believe all ADA soil types have an acidifying effect. I find mine, after about a year, is breaking into "muddier" particles but as the plants are already rooted, it doesn't seem to be any problem. Some folks add a layer of ADA PowerSand (which I understand is a pumice/peat combination that serves as a nutrient sponge) beneath the Aquasoil, but i don't think it's absolutely necessary. But i wouldn't use soily base ferts like JBL's as they would cloud up the water easily, given the ADA soil's loose texture.
Let said if I would want to have base fertilizer added, would the ADA PowerSand hold down the base fertilizer?

renrub, please be patient.... in the weekends, many folks are out with their families, social activities, some even have to work..... try not to "up" just for its own sake.
Anyway, like I said earlier, I think most people probably don't dare to use ADA soil with normal base fert like JBL, Dennerle etc (except PowerSand), as the chances of the fert leaching out and clouding the water appears quite high. YOu are of course welcome to try and report the results.

No problem using JBL with ADA. I don't uproot my plants frequently so i think it' should be okay.

hi budak........i must be one of those 'crazy' guys to try ada and jbl aquabasis. I tried uprooting a few of my 'terrarium plants' in my tank and despite the yanking, visible leaching was not obvious. but of course i can't say much about things that i can't detect visibly. but gladly, no algae bloom preceding that incident. so i guess it's okay to use them both to a certain extent.
renrub, my substrate is 4cm base fert and 7cm ada. go ahead and try out them both if you want. anything else you need to know before making the plunge? []

I would be more worried about NH4 or NO2 poisoning than algae bloom if the fert leaches into the water collumn.----------------

i was advised that the ADA powersand base fert is very good... you dun need the top soil and can use any others such as lonestar - in that you savew on cost and still get the benefits of the powersand...
was told that you need 2 pack of the powersand in S size and 1 pack of ada aquasoil for a standard 2ft
Anyways, i am also contemplating rescaping with ADA - you know of anywhere i can buy them cheap?

sorry to burst yr bubbles, but the price of a 9kg pack of ADA gravel is equivalent to a 22kg lonestar with a 5kg JBL base fertilizer

I was prepared to pay - but need an estimate with regards to how many packs to buy.... my tanks base is 24" by 14" - how much powersand and aquasoil do i need? and where can i buy them at the best prices possible?
