does the pump work?
have you filled your filter completely with water?
you have to make sure that there are no air pockets.

Dude relax... this filter can be started EMPTY!
Step 1: Attached all hose to the tank. Attached cannister inlet hose from tank to cannister (ONLY) and get ready.
Step 2: Water from tank suppose to enter the 2217 thru the inlet at the bottom of the cannister. Attached a "temp" hose to the outlet located at the top of the cannister. USE a hand pump or if not then use you mouth (I DID!) A forceful SUCK JOB will get the water in the tank to flow right into the cannister.
Step 3: Wait till the cannister is almost 80 - 90% full, attach your cannister to the outlet hose to the tank and see bubble being forced out into the tank.
Step 4: When water levels out (bubbling from outlet pipe stops) the cannister should be 99% full of water (1% trapped air) just turn on the power, pump should work just fine!
I find this filter much easier to start than other filter...[]
Baby Steel!
Hi, I have
1) filled Container with water to the brim.
2) Suck water from the "Out" hose(Swallowed some fert and water also)
3) Filling all hose with water.
All these method you have mention did not work either. Getting frustrated already. Have to change to another pump with "Prime" feature. Maybe the 2026 or something. Or has anyone got any cheaper solution than the Ehiem ones?[]
Hi, Just heard from a friend that using a Canister filter. The methods are easy. just want to share and see if anyone also uses such a method.
1) Leave Canister empty with all the media and sponges inside.
2) Attach tube to Fish tank at allocated place.
3) Make sure that the valve is close until firmly place.
4) Open inlet valve, followed by outlet valve.
5) Once Canister is being filled with water. It should push out all the Air.
6) Once full with water, on the power and, PRESTO, the filter is working.
Hmm...sounds easy enough yeah....anyone please comment if these are the methods...
hi agrees with limsteel, have been using this method for about 10 years on my 2217 and 2215. Not having any problem with this method. but make sure that the canister does not contain any water, it's easier and you will not drink any water from the tank [] when you suck.
Remember DON'T FILL IN ANY WATER IN THE CANISTER.
hi bulldog.........i faced the trouble of using an unprimeable filter like 2217 recently.....and the experience is not an easy one. But here r my trial and error steps:
1) Bring the cannister to your toilet.
2) Fill in water thru the water inlet tubing and wait till the cannister is full and water comes out of the water outlet tubing.
3) Shake cannister well and lay it on its side.
4) Fill in more water again to dispel air.
5) Repeat 3 and 4 a few times.
6) Bring the cannister to the tank, remember not to let water leak out from the tubings' opening.
7) Attached accordingly to whatever your inlet/outlet/reactor.
Switch on the cannister.
9) You will experience non movement of water. Lay cannister on its side and shake it if necessary to dispel air. (It's freaking heavy).
10) Repeat step 9 until water flows and no clicking sounds are emitted from the cannister.
Why so many steps right? And what's with all the shaking? It realy depends on what media you use in the cannister as they can trap air very well as you fill up with water. Stuff like sponges and CR trap air damn well. Anywell, i complemented my 2217 with a jebao 918 which comes with priming. Save me so much time and effort. Any primeable cannisters should save you a lot of trouble. Cheers!

Hi guys, Thanks for all the advice given. Unfortunately, I gave up the Filter and return back to its rightful owner yesterday nite. Now me will be looking out for a Filter that "Primes"....save me some trouble and nightmares too.
Thanks again!![]()

U sold yr filter? Sad story....
no I didn't sell my filter so to speak. I actually bought it from a guy, 2nd hand. But since cannot work, the guy was very kind enoough to let me return it and take back my money!!!
hahahha...we all give so detailed steps and you gave it back ah? So sad []
anyway, considering its cost, 2217 packs enough flow rate and space to hold media....quite a good filter![]()
yeah i know man!! pai seh lar everyone! [] [
] didn't have a choice. I know the 2217 is a good filter from the people i know who have used it.
Thanks again![]()
No need for so many steps lah. I am using an Eheim 2224 without primer and this is what I did to start it:
1) start a drain hose
2) connect drain hose to the outlet (let the suction power suck the water out of the canister)
3) bingo!![]()

Well if ur budget can go up between $200~$300 get a Eheim Pro II 2026/2028. A 2026 model can field up to 300l so good for both 3 and 4 ft. Mine is a 2026 vs 3ft. I got it for $250 almost close to cost price as the guy was trying to get rid of this filter.
The good thing abt ProII is that there is a hatching at the In/Out flow valve which allows u to dettach w/o leaking water and bring the entire component to the restroom for washing. Pretty convenient to me.
Jebao on the otherhand do not have this. U will notice the design is almost similar to a ProII (Jebao is a copycat) [] . To allow water flow, ProII has a push button without having to suck water into ur mouth. Genius for Eheim...very well design and a waterflow controller.
How the tubing runs, u can design ur own from the LFS DIY tubes and tube joints.
