How to convert normal tank to IOS tank

any idea how a DIY could be done?

This can be done but will involve some custom cut glass with the right dimensions and some skills with the silicone "gun" to secure them in place. Short of doing that, an external sump can be done but this runs with the risk of leakage and flooding if the pumps fail. If you wish to do this, I would suggest that you go to a tank maker for help at a price. Having professionals do it might be the best idea if you don't want your DIY work to look unsightly or be faulty for some reason.

if you are planning to really diy, try to use glass instead of acrylic as acrylic will not hold even if you had use ton of silicon as it will naturally float in water....

speaking from my own experience..
