I noticed that quite a few shrimp tanks posted by members here used undergravel filter as part of the filtration system. Is there any special benefits of undergravel filter for shrimps? Or this is just a personal preference?

for me is making full use of the undergravel system to cultivate more bb. but i have come out an idea to prevent soil from expire by putting inert sand over the under gravel panels instead.

Well...purpose of ugf is to cultivate more beneficial bacteria for the shrimps.
However...like what bro evil said...ugf will actually expired your soil faster...but overall it depends on the how the ugf was set up.

My 1st attempt in ugf...has let me learn many...it all happens after about 12-13 months running the UGF DIRECT SUCTION into my 2 Canister 2028 & 2217. Top layer of my UGF panel with a layer of netting and a thin layer of dennerel quartz.

    What mistake have I made???
UGF should not do direct suction to canister???
Did i used the wrong stuff on the UGF top layer???

I think direct to canister is way too strong. Use a strong air pump is good enough

I'm actually curious on why UGF is preferred for you guys. (I got this question in my mind after reading about eviltrain's thread on his beta shrimp tank.) I'm looking to start a CRS tank so am researching on why this method is preferred by you guys.

Why an inert layer of substrate helps? Water is still moving through the soil and inert substrate, so it is just making expiration of soil slower?

haha, that means you never read through my thread enough. my layout is as follow

    5. inert sand (quartz sand)
    4. fine netting
    3. ehiem subtract pro
    2. fine netting
    1. undergravel panel

there is no soil at the under gravel part.

i have a piece of glass to partition the soil away from the under gravel ( front soil , back ugf )

Ugf add more biofilter capaility and eliminate the choice of inlet sponge. it comes with other disadvantages like initial extreme
low ph and breakdown of soil. however, with proper choice of soil, these 2 problems can be avoided.

Re: Undergravel filter for shrimp tanks?

I had always been leery of UGF because of the potential for it to get clogged, and the amount of work required to then overhaul to clean it out. Can't beat the price and ease of setup though, just that I wouldn't use it on a tank that's going to eventually be difficult to overhaul

haha well thanks to bro felix and his daiso shrimp department recommendation i adopt his method and now using it should make change or maintain easier.
