Been looking at amano's books (1 and 3) and noticed even for deep tanks, some 90 cm deep, he uses FL lights and not MH lights. (deduced this fro the wattage given...eg....4 x 20W...etc)

Also, he uses much less than 1 watt per liter.....yet the plants are doing well.....glosso.....riccia...etc.

How does he manage this...I am told I need MH lights and 1 watt per liter of water....(for my 75cm deep tank).

Also anyone knows how big a chiller I need for a 850 liter tank ??

He compensates lights with good CO2.

Any brands you have in mind? Different brands may give you different ratings. But for a rough estimate, you'll probably need a 1hp chiller.

Can you explain what you mean by " compensates with good CO2 "" as I am a newbie.

Also, not sure of brand of Chiller but guess the Healia or Resun (I think)...... cheaper brands as go no budget....

    To put it very simply...

Photosynthesis depend on amount of light and CO2 available. More light or CO2 will increase photosynthesis.

Temperature will also play a part. Higher the temperature, the more energy is consumed. By keeping temperature low, it lowers energy demand and plant need less energy from photosynthesis. So plant can survive lower light at lower temperature.

Hi very interesting deduction here, am i right to say that for a 4 x 1.5 x 1.5 tank. A 4 x 36W Pl is sufficient for the growing of all plants? Including Glosso?

correct me if i m wrong, a newbie myself.
the lighting AMANO used was those that design by ADA, it was built specially for plant. most ADA light were built to 7500-8000k which is ideal for plant( stated by ADALAB) and has high average colour display index(Ra) compare to normal FL or PL tube. normal tube Ra 40, NA tube ra90. maybe thats y he can use lesser wattage for his tank. for more info pls refer to AQUAJOURNAL VOL. 36.

I am not really sure if it works like that.
Light and CO2 are both needed. With high light even with no CO2 you can have results with the opposite I am not sure, one thing is for certain though not enough light and lots of CO2 will make glosostigma grow taller. As for Amano hmmm.

I am not certain what relationship this unit, Kevin (K), indicating colour temp have with respect to colour spectrum of light, all I know is that plants grow best in the red and blue spectrum of light. Light tube manufacturers can market their products in whatever way they want but that's the fact.

This 4 parts article from Tropica will explain the light and CO2 relationship.

CO2 and light stimulate the growth - part 1
CO2 and light stimulate the growth - part 2
CO2 and light stimulate the growth - part 3
CO2 and light stimulate the growth - part 4

    Corrections...

Normal tubes, e.g. Osram Dulux 860, has a Ra 80-90.

Ra measures the colour rendering of a light compared to sunlight and does not measure the amoung of photosynthetic active radiation (PAR). It has nothing to do with the amount of wattage required.
