    Bro you have to change all the soil and recycle your tank again. Those old soil u can either throw/give or sell it to people that keep planted tank.

    Better to reset than sorry. No point save that few cents and later encounter more problem arising.

    Re: Lifespan of soil

    Soil estimated life span is about a year ...

    Overall still depends on;
    - what filtration
    - how you aged the water for wc

    But normally is about a year...
    I will suggest you to change/reset tank & soil about a year.. Don't wait till your tank start seeing death den rectify.

    Re: Lifespan of soil

    There are a few reasons to change soil,

    1. If you're using it to lower / buffer pH, then the soil needs to be changed once it is exhausted and can no longer maintain the water at the desired pH. Technically, one can extend it by using other pH controlling methods.

    2. The soil breaks down and turns to mud (see point 3)

    3. The soil is choked, either from waste or soil granule breakdown and one can see air pockets and purple reddish patches forming underneath the soil surface. When the air pockets are released, a rotten egg odor can be smelled.

    By this stage, the soil is turning into a anaerobic bed for sulphate-reducing bacteria. These bacteria uses sulphate in place of oxygen and produces toxic hydrogen sulfide gas as by-product. Do not wait till this stage before changing the soil.
