    Hi folks,

Went to Serangoon North and trying my luck to look for green Neons at Petmart. No luck, it was closed. So I went to the shop next door. Saw a tankful of Cabomba with flowers (I believe) going for $1 dollar. More tan a dozen stems in a bunch so price wise, it is cheap I guess. Could be an over supply of this plant on the market.

My questions ... does Cabomba flowers often in aquarium and what are the conditions for it to flower (for eg. above surface etc) ? Thanks.

    Cheers,
    Peter

cabomba flowering in the home aquarium is difficult
i tried increasing fert, lighting, root supplements, allowing them to trail on the surface, nothing works
they didn't even grow the floating leaves
to date i still haven't seen any home aquarium with cabomba flowers
if anyone has some please share your method or conditions

And yet the specimens we see in LFS and farms have lush foliage and abundant flowers and buds. Where do they get'em? My guess is that nothing short of full burst sunlight at least 7-8 hours a day will work.

Some books suggest that Cabombas are part of the water lily family.

A good substitute to Cabombas (which almost always deteriorate after a while in tanks) is Limnophila sessilis or L. aquatica. They look similiar superficially, but do very well with medium to bright light and good CO2.

I know certain plants which aren't true aquatic can be forced to produce flowers if either they are allowed to grow out of the water or the height of the water is too high such that they can't grow that tall. tho I think cabomba is a true aquatic plant (rite?) and hence doesn't apply much to it but maybe where they are farmed they are allowed to grow very tall till they flower? (under sunlight and all) but it's just that when they are harvested the tops are cut to put in pots and sold at LFS so what you see are actually the top only of an originally very tall plant? and if you let it grow again it can't reach the right height?

DEA: heh with your single line, you've killed my entire reply!

well I have never seen it really farmed b4, those at say ah-pek are also oredi potted. so like I said perhaps they were farmed from SOMEWHERE else? as in the really plant in the soil kind of farming, not the import in small pots then throw in a big concrete vat to sell kind of farm. anyway just anyhow guessing.
