1. Green carpet like algae - What are those green carpet like algae? How do I get rid of it? It is actually quite nice if it is not harmful to the tank.
2. White Hair - What are these? they are growing on the tip of some of the leaves on thep lants. How do I get rid of it?
Hope to hear from you guys.

why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

Anyway, can check this thread in the Aquatic FAQ for algae identification:

Sorry guys. I forgot to change it to public access. I've changed it already. Hope you guys can advise. Thanks.

It seems like you are pretty low on the CO2. Do a check on the pH and KH and then feedback...

Ahhhh.....B...B...A!!!!!

I had the green algae on driftwood like yours. Initially I thought it was quite nice. But after a while it became a real mess and start spreading. Once it is establish it is very difficult to get rid of... even with good CO2 and nutrient supply. The only way for me is to remove the wood and bleach it.----------------

The white hairy stuff I had too when I used Dennerle Gold 7. I suspect it was some bacteria stuff. But my SAE gobble them up pretty fast.

An interesting note is that some people like this green furry algae (I don't consider BBA). Check out the hairgrass tank at NA - Chan deliberately grew algae on his driftwood before adding it into the tank.

My KH is 3 - 4. My PH is 6.5. I recently just increased my co2 to get rid of bba, which was pretty successful even though there are still traces here and there.
Are those green stuff bba? I had bba previously and it didn't look like that.
If they are not, can I keep it growing? It is quite nice if it is not harmful. As for the white hair stuff, it is quite strange. Last nite I couldn't see any. But this morning I saw some again.
Hi guys,
Any help on this? I've read the link but not sure where these 2 belongs to. Is it ok to keep the greeen stuff growing? I don't think it is BBA though.

Don't look like BBA to me too. I have this too on my driftwood. I can't get rid of it, actually I did not try to rid of it. It gives a natural look which I'm fine with it. So you question whether you want to leave it or not, my answer would be up to you.
Hi everyone, need some help.
The some parts of green-looking carpet algae was has turned white. Any idea why is that? The funny thing is it looks like both the white and green stuff is growing simultaneously on other parts of the driftwood! I originally wanted to let the green stuff grow cause it looks quite nice, but the white stuff dun look good at all. Are the white stuff algae?
Some of the leaves on the plants has got 0.5cm length white hair-like growing on it. What is that?
Hope some of the experience guys in the forum can help me out.
thanks.

Probably some variety of hair-algae or fungus....I definitely would not recommend you to keep those stuff as they can get out of control if you don't keep up with the maintenance of your tank. Just do a good scrub down and prunning of your tank..big water change and cleaning of filter and finally correcting the nutrients (something is missing here...check and double check your CO2 real good again..make sure it is in good range for the entire photoperiod and not just in the early morning or so. Add fresh nutrients back after a large water change and a guess in midweek or twice should prevent things from running out. Large water change to prevent buildup if plant-growth is not a max rate.)

Thanks Peter. If I add fresh nutrients would that encourage the algae to grow too?

Think I got similar ones. I used tubes to suck them, green cloth to scrape them off, dip the wood in pure tap water for an hr, all not effective. Water change has been constant to twice a week, so its an average 3 days 1 water change of 30% to 40%.
I took the following measurement:
NH3/NH4 0
NO2 0
KH 6
GH 8~9
FE 0.25~0.5
PH 6.6
I took two readings of FE, one from water surface at 0 and the other bottom of the tank at 0.25~0.5 Rest of the readings, the water was draw from bottom of the tank for a more accurate reading.
Here's the worry, think my otos went to eat them, apparently its seems like hairy algae to me but yet the tank is not heavy on the FE, so here is the puzzle of the 3ft baby. So far casualty rate of at least 5 otos, all with stomach full full...No casualty for 5 to 6 days liao. Still monitoring.

ckohmh, forget about the algae other than harassing it constantly through frequent prunning/removal and weekly large water changes (Don't use nutrient limitation to prevent algae..you are going to hurt your plants more!). Your main focus is to get the plants going which can only be done by giving it what it wants..(Light,CO2,N,P,K,GH and traces). I personally find Tom Barr's estimative index method pretty good if you don't mind the weekly large water changes...(Most NO3 kits we use have very bad resolutions and can lead you down the wrong path..).

KnightStriker, your CO2 level is a tad too high probably for the liking of your otos. I would suggest you to lower your CO2 level to between 20-30ppm range instead.

heh heh, bad resolution for the powder ones right? Me use the entire series from Auarium Pharmaceutical Inc. BTW, I did lower my water fertilizers and buildup is seen to be slower. ^_^ maybe I should stop the fertilizing process ha ha...

Err..from which readings do u gather this conclusion? All other otos do not get concussion due to ph extreme changes nor did my buddies indicate that there was a problem with CO2/PH.----------------

Forgot to mention, although the DIY is running at 24hr, I designed another tube supplying 24hr air serving 2 x 2ft and 1 x 3ft. Basically to complement each other. Pearling effect is only when at the 7hr cycle not the 1hr cycle. The idea is to drive the temperature of the tank low during the day maintaining between 27 degree to 28 degree without reaching 29.
This is a Kiasi setup. Once I turn up the CO2 to observe whats pearling effect is like. After that I forgot to turn down the supply. Next day when I got back, the fish were all konked. I turn up the air supply and immediately change water. Luckily the incident did not have any casualty. From that time onwards, I was quite convinced that this Kiasi setup does have its usefulness in saving the fish population.![]()
