Hi William,

Technically, you can connect anything before the filter. However, almost all in-line connection are done after the external cannister filter is because you have less maintenance to do.

Passing filtered water through your UV light, External CO2 reactor, Chiller etc, etc will ensure that all the goop and gunk is trap at the filter first. Otherwise, your other equipment will indirectly serve as a pre-filter for your external cannister.

If you can live the the increased frequency in maintenance, there's nothing wrong with such an arrangement. If not, set them up after the cannister filter.

Is UV a must for planted tank?

Actually, IMO, UV filtering should be avoided for planted tanks. It can kill off your beneficial bacteria which is vital for your N cycle and it's known to oxidise certain nutrient vital to plant growth. Some people use it to clear green or cloudy water but only as a temp measure. It is then switched off until needed again.
