Hi all, i just set up my very 1st planted tank and left it to cycle to 2 weeks. I was thinking hard and have decided to bring in shrimps.

    I have some qns though:

    1) Are shrimps low maintenance and clean? The tank is right beside my bed and I cannot have a tank full of 'shit'. Hopefully something that can clear the algae too.

    2) What are some of the hardy and not too expensive shrimps for a noob like me? I like the red ones.

    3) I was looking at taiwan reds and sakuara for $4.5/$3.5 at CRS Haven. Any cheaper or better places?

    4) Any remarks abt my tank environment (pic below) for the shrimps? I hope none of my plants are toxic. Its a 1.5 feet low tech tank, led lamp, gex hof. For ferts, im using florish excel, dymax iron essentials and dymax flora plus (all on half of recommended dose). Im also using OceanFree Super Fish Guard to treat cholrine.

Crs haven sell shrimps that are on the expensive side if you want hardy shrimp get sakuras or cherry at c328 they are in packet of 5 shrimps per pack for 8$ which is cheaper compared to crs haven and when there is new stock of sakuras in c328 most of the packet got berried sakura shrimps inside.which costs double in crs haven as they charge double for berried shrimps. MOD if i am breakIng rules as i say crs heaven do delete this comment

    Re: Absolute noob to shrimp

Word of advise, if you want to get shrimps, try not to put in ferts or at least to the bare minimum.

    1) Shrimps basically are on a low bioload compared to fishes. So long as you have a good filter, you should not be looking at a tank full of "shit". For algae cleaner I would suggest Nerite snails and Otos.

    2) Some inexpensive shrimps if you like red are cherry. sakura and fire reds.

    3) I believe that if you were to visit some local fish shops such as c328, y618 you should be able to get some nice shrimps at better prices.

    4) As shrimps are sensitive, its better for you not to meddle too much and keep ferts to minimum. Some of the content in the ferts might be harmful to shrimps.

Also noticed that your setup does not include a chiller. Care to advise your tank temperature? Shrimps might not be able to take the temperature especially with such hot weather these days.

    Re: Absolute noob to shrimp

Hmmm.. They are actually the same species but of different grade with fire red being the highest grade and reddest. C328 is clementi blk 328 while y618 is yishun blk 618. They are good shops to view as they carry good stocks of shrimps. But if you are willing to pay a better premium, you can also pay Green Chapter a visit as they have good quality shrimps. Will still be cheaper than CRS haven though.. Hope it helps! =)

I seen my friend keep yellow shrimps at the living room 28-30 degree in a nano tank and the shrimps still berried and baby survives. So I guess you be ok.

    Re: Absolute noob to shrimp

Yellow Shrimps/ cherries/ Sakuras/ Fire red all could be kept in a room temperature. They can infact survive in a wide range of temperature if they are accumaltised properly.
Been awhile since i last kept shrimps/ fishes, please give me your kind guidance!

Any small fish is fine as long their mouth is smaller than the shrimps and give plenty of hiding place for shrimps

    Re: Absolute noob to shrimp

Oto is one of the safest bet. But do note that they do snatch food from crs as well as knock and shock the crs by banging into them or darting around. Not much harm though.

    Re: Absolute noob to shrimp

I have White Cloud Mountain Minnows in my shrimp tank to handle seed shrimps and white worms. Shrimplets all swimming around them. Seems they won't go for shrimplets if you can manage to keep them well-fed. My observations anyways.

    Re: Absolute noob to shrimp

Ember tetras are quite small and non-aggressive, but like what was mentioned, anything that is able to fit into their mouth might become food, so shrimplets may be in danger unless you have lots of hiding places. The bigger shrimps are fine living alongside them..
