Fine sand bottom with driftwood tangles and ketapang leaves scattered here and there. Some easy plants like hornwort or floating plants for shade for biotope style tank. Other usual setup is ADA soil, usually Africana, with plants tied on wood and rocks. Simple rule of thumb, lots of hiding places, shaded and not too many boisterous tankmates. You can use some tetras like pencilfishes as dither fish for a pair of apistos. Typical size for a pair is 1 ft. 2 ft is the best size for breeding them. If you have a larger tank with great rockwork, driftwood placement and plants for hideouts, you can keep several pairs of the same species in it with little problems.
    Fish.. Simply Irresistable
    Back to Killies... slowly.

my main concern with apistos is they tend to have stringy poops,so is it fine that i treat the tank first before adding apistos?

The stringy poo is internally affecting the fish, what is the point of treating tank without live stock? If you mean cycle tank, please do cycle the tank before adding the fish. If you need help on how to deworm apistogramma. Please kindly refer to deworming apistogramma.
