    has anyone tried using a test tube to collect the gas
    is it possible

    any purpose of doing so?
    should be possible. just pipe the co2 output into the test tube. co2 being a heavier gas should displace other gasses.

    just curious.
    if i invert the tube and pump co2 in no gas will escape to the surfaceand the co2 level will increase

    Probably, but that doesn't mean dissolving rate is better. For all you know the gas will keep accumulating in the test tube until it is so full that extra gas just end up bubbling away. Methods for diffusing DIY CO2 are still very much ineffective as compared to pressurized CO2. Your test tube method is comparable to the inverted bell method, where dissolving rate is poor.
