    Dear all,

I actually just setup a new tank. Today is the first day. I got a new ada soil and etheim canister 2224 running on it now. Do i need to do a water change? What test kits should i get? Please specify the brand and possible price too. It's a 2x1x1.5 tank.

What do i need to wrap up the filter hose. The part where the water start flowing into the canister. I need to prevent of future baby shrimp from getting suck inside.

    Congrats on your new tank!

Don't do a water change. Let the tank finish its cycling period. There are numerous test kits available, brands include API and Tetra. I personally use API because I'm used to it. But don't put too much faith into test kits. It has been discussed that they sometimes give wrong results.

I don't know about shrimp keeping but I've seen them covering the filter intake with sponge or a mesh.

When ammonia / nitrite has reading of 0 and there are some readings of nitrate. You can purchase the gush filter guard to prevent shrimplets from ending up in your canisters.

I bought most my stuff at petmart since i stay around serangoon area. Few bucks cheaper might not be worth the time and hassle travelling also. Maybe you can state where you stay so people can advise accordingly? And ya, im using sera test kits.

wind88, have you read up on cycling your tank? No offence but I'm concerned because it seems you're going into shrimp keeping but don't know about the nitrogen cycle. Shrimps are generally expensive so it's better if you do a little reading before investing your money. Shrimps are more sensitive to water conditions than most fish too imho.
