yes it doesn't work like that..and if you run 2 canisters of different flowrates simultaneously ,you will probably end up with impeller or motor problems in one or both of the canisters.

So in conclusion if I wanna hve flowrate of 2400 l/h, I can only get eheim 2260 rite and not 2x2028?
But I still hear someone usin 2 canisters for their single tank fr time to time, don get it. Unless one works like a prefilter wihout any impeller?

But i am quite sure it doesn't work A+B..it is just basic physics, it is not superimposable.. any bro have the flowrate metre and already experiment with this can also input..your input will be valued

A series set up canister filter usually will have one canister filter running both of the filter. Usually a larger model will be the main running while the smaller model would either be a mechanical or a pre-filter. Also, the use of 2 similar model is also possible, owner of such setup should not packed too much filter media or filter wool and sponge in the 1st canister filter as it would constraint the working canister filter. The biological filter are usually left alone as the bacteria are to be kept alive. The mechanical filter or the pre-filter are usually the one which are maintained during maintenance period ie being cleaned.
To understand better the concept of a series canister filter setup is to understand the function or role of each canister filter in this series setup. The first canister filter in this series setup function as a debris trap. Debris such as broken plants, uneaten fish food and fish waste are trapped here in the first canister filter and are prevented from entering the second canister filter to prevent the clogging up of the media that housed the bacteria in the second canister filter. These debris would break down into their useful compound and will be consumed by the bacteria WITHOUT clogging the bacteria media that will in turn lessen the bacteria population should the bacteria media is clogged. This usually happen in a single canister filter and when you do a maintenance, the bacteria population is usually wiped out in the process, not entirely but a large proportion.
However, a series setup isn't a cure all medicine. Over time, the biological end of this series setup would eventually be clogged too, not by debris that bypass the first canister filter but by built up of waste or dead bacteria. This probably occur due to the flow rate naturally slowed down and the canister filter unable to clear this event as fast as when it was first setup. There are factor that attribute to this but I won't go into detail. This scenario will happen but it will take years ( in my experience 3 years after set up, your mileage may vary depending on the livestock of the tank ). When this happen, it is time to replace some of the badly clogged bacteria media with new ones. Never replace 100% of the bacteria media in a matured tank setup as it will create a spike in the water parameter eg bacteria bloom which consume a lot of oxygen and asphyxiate the fish.
The above is based on my personal observance, your mileage may vary. None of the above observance are based scientifically but through my own understanding of how things happen. Hope this helps!

Thks mod for getting into detail, I was told that hving 2 canisters chained to each other, it would stress the one and only impeller thus will shorten it life force as well rite?
If Im running 2 canisters indivdually, like I describe earlier having one act as mech filter on 1 end and another act as biological filter on the opposite end.

nope. it does not work in the way you'll like it to. the 'cleaner' water coming out from the 'mechanical filter' will mix with the 'dirtier' tank water and goes into the 'biological filter'. very soon your 'biological filter' will be clogged. there is a purpose in the arrangement of different filter media types in a filter and BFG has explained this earlier.
if you want to run 2 filters in a tank, you either run them as individual filters (each with its own complete set of filter medai) or in series (explained by BFG). the output of the individual filters can be placed side-by-side or at opposite corners of the tank.
if you want to run 2 filter in series, the first filter is the one with higher flow rate and is the mechanical filter. the output is connected to the input of the second lower flowrate (preferably equal or slightly lower). this second filter is the biological filter, is unpowered and the impeller is removed. the is minimal impact on lifespan of the filter as the filter output is designed 'to push' water up a certain height. this will be similar to the 'resistance' caused by the second filter.

Firstly, IMO I do think that if you do link cannisters in series, you should use the "pull" method. As cannister body are designed to be pulled. As you can see that based on one cannister, the impeller are pulling water from the cannister body out to the output.
Furthermore, what you said "the output is connected to the input of the second lower flowrate (preferably equal or slightly lower)." does not make any sense. What's there to be specific about the flowrate when it's a non-powered dummy?
Cannister are designed so that it can make use of the water pressure from the tank that you are powering itself to generate flowrate. Unlike pumps, most external cannisters uses very little power. Water pressure will direct the water to the same level of the water in the tank itself, then the cannister will furthermore power the flow into the tank that it's servicing on. Whereas a pump, pumps water from I.e the sump to the top tier of the tank. This is pure power, negligible water pressure involved.

To add on, just a few simple questions.
If you use several canisters and run them in series, with only one of the canisters powered, what will the flow rate be like?
What if you do not remove the impeller from the cannister, which part of the motor/impeller will be spoilt? And is there any example in any forum whereby you hear hobbyist complaining that their cannister is split due to the above?

a) Depending on the user but do expect the flowrate to decrease.
B) Never tried that as my thinking is that both canister flowrate would never be equal due to the amount of filter media. Solely because of this, if one canister flowrate is higher than the other, one is going to be blocked while the other would experience a drag. By blocked, what I meant that a higher flowrate canister filter cannot push water at it's own flowrate past a similar model canister filter which is a bit slower due to unknown reason. A drag however is the opposite scenario of the above, which a similar model canister filter cannot pull water as fast as it could due to the first canister filter in the series has a slower flowrate due to unknown reason.
I might be wrong as I never had this verified.

Hi BFG, currently I have this setup running,
The setup is something like that:
Water from tank > ehiem 2032 > 4x2213 > 2036.
I was expecting the flowrate to be slowed much too before I setup this filtration system. Thus, I chose the pulling method by turning on the 2036 which is right at the end of the system. However, the flowrate turned out to be almost the same compared to the 2036 running on its own.
And to add on, the media in all filters in this setup are all packed full of small sized media, with the first 2032 being the sole mechanical filter.
As this setup is mainly used for caltivating different form of bacteria which is better in slow flow, I ended up turning on only the 2032 instead. Haha.

Haha, BFG. I do think that the reason for part B applies to the senatio whereby both canisters are running in series, with both of them turn on. Then there will be a push or drag happening to the impeller part of the second canister. This may cause the motor part of the canister to weaken overtime.
However, if we are talking about one of the canister being off. The impeller in the first place will not even move!![]()
There is forum members stating that if you do not remove the impeller, there will be a bottleneck effect. But I do think that there Would not be any as most, if not all ehiem canisters are designed like this (shown in attached photo, example of a 2211) there should be no area for the bottleneck effect to happen and no way that you ate going to spoil the impeller if the impeller are not going to move in the first place.cheers

So in conclusion if i hve 2 or twin canister running and not chained up, it wont serve any purpose whether that is A canister in mech mode and B in biological mode, and flowrate will never be A+B rite?
