air trapped inside should escape. then water will go in then it will be heavy and sink

You need to squeeze the air out of the sponge bro. . .

Which sponge filter are you using? If after squeezing air does not fix the floating issue, then you need to tie a rock or a weight to the sponge filter to sink it.

Back to Killies... slowly.
Put in some small pebbles to help it sink
