Thank you for the guide. I committed the same mistake until someone here pointed it out to me. However the reason was that the terrestrial plant is harmless to the water. So which is the real reason? Just want to clarify thanks!
I started this thread to help AQ members identify the common terrestrial plants sold in our LFS so that we can all stop wasting money and killing plants.
The following pictures were taken from various AQ threads and belong to members of AQ. This thread has no intention of directing mockery at anyone. If anyone minds their picture being here PM me and I'll take it down.
Differentiation between terrestrial and aquatic plants:
- The leaves of a terrestrial plant are often waxy/smooth.
- The "structure" and "body" of a terrestrial plant is often more "rigid".
- Root structure and formation is often reduced in an aquatic plant.

Having said that, many aquatic plants in this hobby have the ability to convert from submersed to emersed form and vice versa. Common examples are:
Hairgrass submersed, Hairgrass emersed
Hydrocolyte submersed, Hydrocolyte emersed
Java fern submersed, Java fern emersed

Moved on from plants to predatory fishes, but still finding for inspiration for a 3ft planted tank.
You mean the real reason why we shouldn't buy terrestrial plants? Mainly so that people will stop wasting money. And while searching for the above pictures I've come across comments that while rotting the sap of these plants are detrimental to fish/shrimp health.
Icic. Now I know why it's harmful! Thanks for pointing out!
