Hi all, As you all know i am getting a new 4 Ft tank (YESSSS!!!)
I found a tank maker (should be a tank maker, he is selling tanks), through one of the bro who introduce the link to me.

Now my question is this - the tank is very cheap, and plus delivery, its a 4 Ft X 2 Ft X 2 Ft tank, 12 mm glass, but there is no brace on top and bottom of the tank.

As far as i know, i have been seeking high and low for tanks, and almost all have brace. I heard from people saying that a brace-less tank can be dangerous, as it does not secure the tank in place, causing the glass to split in time to come.

    - As i am new in getting a big tank, may i kindly seek any bro opinion on this?
    - Is brace a must? or is it redundant?

thank you for your kind contributions - and thanks for helping me to find my 4 Ft tank!!
Been awhile since i last kept shrimps/ fishes, please give me your kind guidance!

The brace is usually only across the midsection at the top for 4 ft tanks, with 2 braces at the sides. Some come with bracing at the bottom. The other alternative is to go with Euro bracing, but that will prevent you from hooking things by the sides of the glass. Generally speaking, having a brace gives you peace of mind. Opinions can differ on this but if the tank quality is excellent and you don't intend to fill the tank to the brim then I guess it should be fine.

Ultimately the choice lies with you.

    me too.

i have a 4 x 2 x 1.5 (ht) tank and was advised by the maker to go with 10mm even with euro bracings. if the height goes to 2 feet, he probably would recommend 12mm with the bracings. if you intend to go braceless, maybe an even thicker glass? as what stormhawk says, if quality is solid, maybe yes. but i wouldn't want to come home to a flood if you get what i mean. the choice is still yours.

For that, you will need a glass maker or a tank maker who has staff willing to go to your place to fix the bracing for you. Necessary details like thickness of glass, style and tank dimensions will be helpful. If you already set it up, my advice is, don't fill it up to the brim. Do not rest anything heavy on the side glass and it should last pretty long. If you're hanging a filter etc on the glass panel, take it off.

    Re: 4 Ft X 2 Ft X 2 Ft tank, 12mm Glass, without Brace - Safe?

Ok bro.. I fill it uP around 3/4 only... And my filter is standing on my 2 ft tank beside it ... I do have a breeder box hanging on the tank... The problem here is I got no place to hang my oHF... Hence I need the brace (should have realize it earlier ) ... What I intend to do is to get thick acrylic, 3 pieces, use gel tape and stick it on top of the tank( 2 on the edge, 1 in the middle ) then I put my OHF on top... What do you think?

Get a cannister filter. Why go braceless if you are putting an overhead filter on your tab?

The idea of braceless tank is not to have anything on top except for a hanging light from a stand or ceiling

    Re: 4 Ft X 2 Ft X 2 Ft tank, 12mm Glass, without Brace - Safe?

Hi bro, I got braceless cause it was cheaper and within my budget... Kind of regret but since I started, might as well find some ways to rectify it. I am intending to get thick acrylic of 10mm placing on 3 area of the tank (resting on the top, secured by using gel tape) and hence put the OHF onto the area. I can't seems to find a canister which is well within my budget and good enough as a mechanic filtration. Additionally I have another canister running at the same time for this tank. I am currently keeping 3 juvenile gar, bichir and rainbow snakehead.

Bro serious? I will be more than happy bro. But my place far from you and I don't drive.. Can't fetch you over. Anyway bro, what do you think if I use acrylic 10 mm thick, 10 cm wide, I silicon to the top edges of the tank.. And also 1 piece in the middle to act as a support for the OHF? Haha I will be buying the acrylic and doing it tomorrow ....

I agree with AquaObsession, the OHF will be redundant since the whole concept is an open look. The OHF would look really out of place. You can compensate by using a larger canister for your tank. The Eheim Pro 3 series would be perfect.

422 Braceless is perfectly fine. Don't do anything. Furthermore, your tank is 12mm thick glass right?

Hi bro, hmm, you are quite right but I still don't feel safe without an OHF to act as a mechanic filter - moreover I can afford an ehiem pro series ... Haha ... My total cost for the panel plus the OHF with 3500l pump is only around $40.... I still like the look of braceless though..

Hey Alex , how do you set up your OHF? Mind taking a picture of it? I have no idea how to set up mine.
