soil not really needed in this case. What you need is to tie the moss on some mesh and lay it out. Wait for it to grow and soon it will cover the ground. Other than that can try to use small lava chips like what i do for my setup

But in future, I do need soil when the plant starts to grow? I bought some java moss tied to coconut shell, how do I remove them? Just pull them out?

    Moss tying guide - http://www.littlegreencorner.com/howtotiemoss.html

a link for your reference bro. Its all up to you bro. If you intend to grow some stem plants then you will need the soil. Usually moss alone do not need soil to grow, just tie it to any surface and it will grow . You can grow the moss on the coconut shell. If you wish to retie, just rip it from the coconut and tie it to the mesh.

Moss do not have roots. What you need is a base for the moss to cling to and let it propagate. You don't need soil in this case if you just want a moss turf.

Thanks for all the replies. I was rash to have some live stock in my tank while my tank is not cycled. Some casualties. Might want to replant my tank and do all over again.

let things settle down abit and monitor, do take note any major shifting in the tank can cause ammonia spike, so best to check that before putting back the lifestock
