I would like to ask a question on the most favoured guppies by locals. I know different people have different taste but would just like to know which type of guppies are favoured.

    1) Albino full red
    2) Moscow guppies
    3) Panda guppies

As I'm still learning about guppies and trying to familiarize the types of guppies , pardon me for my ignorance. Can some bros here vote what type of guppies they like? If the guppies are not in the choices , kindly state what types do you like. Thanks

    Re: Most favoured guppies

My personal favorite are snakeskin fantail types. Though I like the wild form as well, with double swords, single sword and pintail forms.

    Re: Most favoured guppies

My favorite guppy strain would be a platinum speartail/spadetail guppy, especially if the guppy has an additional autosomal recessive "stoerzbach metal" gene, which gives the guppy a glossy shine.

I still like this type of metallic guppies, they remind of how I got into fishes. Jianyang, is this the kind of guppy you are talking about?

They are pretty fishes, I used to breed the spadetail/speartail variant of these a couple of years ago.

    Re: Most favoured guppies

I kinda like the second one. Any idea where to get this strain of guppies? Now very hard to find good quality guppies of different strains. Most I see are Albino Full Reds.

    Re: Most favoured guppies

I doubt anyone is breeding this strain at the moment but it's worth trying to see if Guppy Galaxy at Sungei Tengah still have these "swords" but don't feel discouraged if you can't find them. They are not too difficult to create after all, just a lot of patience & luck but it's fun. From what I see, I think Kenjiro used a Vienna Emerald doublesword & a blond snakeskin roundtail to create this. This is my guess.

Sungei Tengah I kinda too far from me. I was hoping to find a reputable breeder for guppies , but now most strains of guppies I see are AFR.

    Re: Most favoured guppies

    Shi Xuan,

Yes the pintail is what I was referring to. However, wild form guppies are the best, at least to me. I've seen lyretail, single sword, pintail among wild guppies I caught from a drain in my town, and some are extra iridescent on the sides, similar to what you describe as the Stoerzbach gene.

It's difficult to find such guppies locally, when they were extremely common in the 80s while I was growing up. These days it's always the boring delta/fan tail forms, and to find decent wild-form guppies one has to look in bags of feeder guppies..

Swallow tail form is funky, but not the type I like. The shorter finned variants of the common guppy are more livelier and swim better as compared to the long finned fancy strains. I don't know how some of these males can breed when they have incredibly long gonopodiums.

    Re: Most favoured guppies

    Jianyang,

I like the wild form of guppy but it's subjected to specific populations & I think some of these prettier variants can be found in parts of South America (Cumana, Venezuela etc.) Till today, I am not really fond of endler-guppy hybrids, which have become of most fancy guppy strains you see today, so I'd stick to Micropoecilia. In fact, there's a discovery of a new possible species, Micropoecilia sp. "Orange line".

Some people think that they might just be a variant of guppy but beautiful to me nonetheless.

Swallow guppies are not of my preference either, just like the size of fancy guppies, which I prefer the smaller ones instead of the over-sized ones. In fact, I like the short tails more than the delta forms, which I simply can't find them any way as graceful as the former.

Nice fish but look deceptively like one of the common Endler variants in the hobby. I should go longkang fishing one of these days.

    Re: Most favoured guppies

Been there when my cousin caught a pail full of males & females with his friend, including some promising ones suitable for selective breeding a few years ago. I have no idea what happened to them after that but I guess they kicked the bucket before they even got to swim in a proper tank.

    Re: Most favoured guppies

Mine survived for 5 generations in a plastic tub with no filtration and just MTS for "tubmates". Had moss in there and some random loose plants from my tanks. They were fed daily with live foods and some flakes every now and then. Only had to change the water once a week or two, depending on the amount of poop present.

    Re: Most favoured guppies

For me , I like the pattern on wild guppies and the colours present on it. I never really fancied fancy strains of guppies even though I have them in my tanks. I have this batch of juvenile guppies growing up , anyone can help me with any ID if it's possible when it's fully matured?
