The staggering cost actually help keep me in touch of my total damage, and resisted impulse purchases!
In my opinion if you don't record them down, every purchase will seem insignificant - but it actually adds up!
Hmm... My breakdown of expenditure on my new tank
Tank 300
Stand 400+
Substrate and tool - Approximately 500
Light - 500
Chiller - 400+
Plants - 50 so far and it's it's not even planted!
Tubing - 30
Still looking for rock and DW ..... Probably ended up 2500 + when I'm complete with the hardscape and planting with the fauna.... Pengsan...
Not to mention that I've bought my own eheim Ecco classic filter and Tetratec 1200 from UK with me. If I have to buy all those filter parts, 3K on one tank also won't be enough....

The thing is, electricity cost with a chiller can be insanely expensive over time. This is why I skip keeping those expensive shrimps altogether. I find it less stressful to keep shrimps that are not so demanding, and less expensive to begin with.

Yeah, agreed that Chiller plays the key role in damage. And more than often, the bills they incurred are not even visible/accountable for.
At least allocate $30 min/mth if you are running a chiller..

Chiller is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of cost. If you keep using distilled water, or an RO unit, the cost will go up even higher. IMO, if you're really serious then spend for the best equipment that you can get. If not it's pointless if you scrimp and save on some aspects, only to see your shrimps not thrive, or worst, die on you.

Hmm i spent approximately about 1k per tank too..it was really pain though.. unknowingly i already gotten myself 6 ehiem canisters 2tanks and a 3tier stand..which means that it will accumulate even more ..! Argh...thanks to the poison in this forum..

People normally start with 1 tank, then 2 then 3 and it can go on till you have one rack for multiple shrimps. That's when the cost really snowballs.
