Mini puffer has done a great job to clear my snail. I can hardly see snail in my tank. Can I leave puffer in the tank cos I observe my mini puffer not attacking my fish. I have almost 30 green tetra, 10 red tetra, 2 ram, 1 SAE, 12 oto, 15 yamato & 1 Golden SAE. But I see golden SAE is attacking my rams. Intend to take out but my worry is alage. Does golden SAE eat spot algae? I have spot alage in my tank.

I left my two mini puffer fishes with my 100 Cardinal and 14 Emperor Tetras. Seem like only the Emperor Tetras got torn fins but I doubth it's done by the puffer as the Emperor always chase away the puffer fish.

My ram got torn fins also. Forget to say I bought 3 small SAE 2 weeks ago, next day 3 small SAE die. 2 eaten by my yamato & 1 jump out from tank become dried SAE. Sad . Now only one 4.5cm SAE with me. Do you think 1 SAE is enough for my 3 feet tank?

what's a golden SAE? sounds like you've gotten the wrong fish.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

Golden SAE = gold CAE (chinese algae eater)?

They can get lazy and prefer fish food. Also known to harass larger fish.

As for algae control, get normal SAE, some otos and shrimp. Spot algae can be easily scraped off manually.

    Well...

wait for nightfall, place net in tank in advance...
    turn off all lights...
after 1-2hrs go spot where the bugger is...
get ready, turn off the lights suddenly and quickly "arrest" the stunned bugger..

if all fails, repeat again (ha... tried and tested) : )
best use 2 nets, left and right hand, 1 to herd, the other to net...

Anybody trying to catch bottom feeders in a planted tank know how hard it is. In fact my CAE and Cory have been digging holes everywhere uprooting my new planted plants, I have replanted my hairgrass for more than 20 times !! After numerous unsuccessful attempts in catching them, I decided to setup a 'mouse trap' and managed to catch the CAE and Cory quite easily !

This is how I setup the trap - cut a PET bottle into half and place the bottom half laying horizontally in the tank. Put some fish food (algae tablet) into the bottle and wait for the fish to enter. Once the fish is in the bottle, use the net to cover the opening end. The rest is a piece of cake See the attached photo I just took to illustrate the method.

In fact within seconds of setting up the trap, I had CAE, Cory and Pleco all inside jostling for the food []

    Wah !

How come we have the same idea !! Guess great minds think alike . I caught my SAE out of my tamnk the same way but in s slightly different way of using the apparatus. I use a half litre mineral bottle and poke lots of tiny holes in it. Next, I tied a string at the bottle neck leading to the surface. Place a piece of algae waffer into the bottle and sink it in. Once the fish enters pull gently on the string and you have a fish in the bottle collection !

    Cheers
