    Dear Shrimp Experts

I am thinking of keeping CRS in my office with air con (weekdays from 8am to 8pm) in a small tank not more than 30cm by 15cm or even smaller. Will be putting soil and some moss in this setup.

    Couple of question:

    1) Can CRS be kept without any filtration. (Don't want to be laible for a
    short-circuit)
    2) How many shrimps can i house in this setup.
    3) If don't feed over the weekend or longer (in case i go on leave), will
    they starve to death.
    4) How often do i need to do partial water changes?

    Appreciate any feedback and advice

    Thanks

Frankly bro, if you have to ask all these questions, I would suggest you start with Cherry shrimps first. Gain some experience and idea of the kind of work needed before you move on to CRS

Thanks Bro Navanod for the prompt feedback. I have kept Cherry Shrimps in a 2 feet tank with only fan before but never tried in a small office setup. Also kept CRS in that setup but not successful as i think my temp to high. No chiller and on hot days can go as high as 29 degrees.

    1) No, crs alot more sensitive to water changes. Start with easy shrimps is better choice
    2) If other shrimp keep low bio load. 2-3 maybe. IMHO I will not keep crs like that. Only cherry or FR
    3) They can last 1-2 days without food. If only conditions are ok.
    4) Once a week? Small tanks when you do WC the parameters fluctuate more.

P.s: do browse around. Don't see people keeping crs in small tanks often. Mostly don't do well even if their able to survive.

Appreciate the feedback. So if i really want to keep CRS what is the minimun tank size 1' by 1' can? I still prefer CRS for their Red/White color.

    Is filtration an absolute must?

I agree that it is harder to maintain water parameters in a small setup. I intend to use the drip method.

Re: Keeping CRS in office environment

I keep a 30cm cube in my office with CRS filtered by Eheim 2213. For hours without aircon, I use a timer to turn on a fan to keep temperature low.

For smaller tank I advise you not to keep CRS as there are more sensitive to water parmeters changes which will fluctuate a lot in a small tank. Keep cherries, fire red, yellow etc.
    1) A least use a small hang over filter for filteration
    2) Better keep about 10 in a 30x15cm tank
    3) With moss or other plants, there will be enough bio film for them to feed on. For me, I just drop a piece of food befoe I leave office on Friday evening.
    4) Once a week or at least on alternate weeks

Re: Keeping CRS in office environment

Sounds like you're already determined to go ahead, hehe.

    Well, in that case:

    1) Can CRS be kept without any filtration. (Don't want to be laible for a
    short-circuit)

At least use an air sponge. A small air pump placed at a good distance and height will never get wet or short

    2) How many shrimps can i house in this setup.

Thats hard to say, depends on tank volume, filtration, waterchange schedules and how often and how much you feed. I can only suggest you start with as few as possible

    3) If don't feed over the weekend or longer (in case i go on leave), will
    they starve to death.

Initially, a new tank will have no algae or microbes for them to eat, so they may starve. You can get a food timer for around $20 (avoid the really cheap ones, food goes bad in those really fast) for weekends. Just be sure to test the amount of food dispensed (let it dispense 1 serving over a piece of paper) to avoid overfeeding. You can use regular fine pallet fish food, or get the Hikari shrimp cuisine

    4) How often do i need to do partial water changes?

Once a week 20% should be good. The aim is to maintain stable pH, GH, TDS and remove nitrate, so unless you're willing to invest in testing equipments, this 20% will be kind of like going in blind and hoping its good enough

Not absolute must. But you need to understand what drawbacks there are. One good point thou filter generate heat & no filter less heat gain from motor.

I do have more tanks without filter then with

Re: Keeping CRS in office environment

changed my office tank, most of the crs survived
ALL my cherry KOed, very likely due to the low ph at 5.6

success with cherry != success with crs, vice versa

I do have more tanks without filter then with
Air pump based filters do not dump much heat into the water although I avoid them because of the noise and the splashes and water marks they make

    thanks for all the feedback.

So theoretically can do without filter as i try to avoid using any of the office power points.

Try with cherry. Less painful on wallet even if they die.

Bb that breaks the harmful stuff down also exists in substrate. But time needed to grow them and how effective really is a issue.

Eg. Dead spots due to water flow will also restrict how things happen. Hope you do some thinking.

My nano currently has 1 cherry 1 Malayan 3 ramshorn 1 baby red platy (will
Be removing and replacing it when it's too large.)
