David, if you ask me, skip the soil and sand altogether. Just tie fern, Anubias and moss to the driftwoods, and make a centerpiece of green. Bare bottom make it easier to maintain in long term.

Lapis at centre also works. Then lay the driftwood on the lapis and just use the easy plants.

Do not have such long lights, any way, prefer to run separately, better.

Yup also, thinking of adding mangrove plants as well, never tried it before. Bought big nanas and got many narrow java ferns.

Mangrove plants not advisable I think. They not easy to get and probably need to be kept in a brackish environment. If you want plants that can grow out of the water, might as well try certain larger swordplants.

How come you do not want to use a T5 light for your larger tank?

How about adding a bag of Sudo bottom sand? It will brighten up the tank. The fish will also like the sand.

What hang-on light? Doesn't the threadstarter's lamps either rest on stands or are being clamped on the tank glass?

Your 3ft looks like the beginning of a riparium set up.
