    Hi all,

I am thinking of adding shrimps to my existing setup for neon tetras. Could you please advise if the substrate/filter is suitable?

I have heard that fine sand is recommended for shrimp and that they don't like the current from filter.. filter1.jpgsubstrate2.jpgsubstrate1.jpg

    Re: Setup for shrimp tank

I'm still a newbie to shrimps, but I'm pretty sure that the tetras will eat the shimplets and will stress out the adult shrimps. Maybe it'll be better to keep a separate tank for the shrimps.

    Re: Setup for shrimp tank

You need to provide many hiding places for shrimps if you want to keep them with fishes.

And also, you will need a range of test kits to test your water parameters. I can see that you have coral chips mix with your soil. You might want to check what is the ph etc as coral chips increase the ph.
Most cardinal and neocardinal shrimps need slight acidic water. And some need cool water so you need a chiller to cool your tank water.
Else there are Sulawesi shrimps which do well in high ph around 8. Don't need cool water. But I heard they are tough to keep.

    Re: Setup for shrimp tank

No point keeping shrimps with neon tetras. It's like putting you with a lion in a expo exhibition hall with booths. Alot of hiding places but forever scared. Trust me. I tried.
Unless you got a big tank. Hmm Maybe 3ft and above? then it be like a amazon but any smaller than that should be like exhibition hall.
Shrimps friendly fishes are algae eaters. Like Oto, you can put rasboras with shrimps, it's much safer but still rasboras do eat meat. It cannot devour adult shrimps but would snack on shrimplets.

A easy shrimp to start with would be cherry shrimps, yellow shrimps. sakuras shrimp are ok too. information on the shrimps living condition can be found here http://www.shrimpnow.com/content.php...(Yellow-Shrimp)
Sulawesi shrimps are not recommended for your first shrimp tank.
Shrimps are 10times harder to keep than tetras. More fact to learn before diving into buying shrimps. Do look around the forum alot of post on how to keep shrimps.
    still learning the hard way!!

    Re: Setup for shrimp tank

Thanks for the advice guys really appreciate it. I dount i ll get shrimps since i dont want them to be forever scared what other alternatives i have as 'clean up crew' then? My tank is 1.5 ft and apparently too small for plecos. Snails also quite heavy on bioload so not too keen

    Re: Setup for shrimp tank

You can add nerite snails (they will not reproduce in freshwater, so low bioload), large shrimp like yamato shrimps (also cannot reproduce in fresh water, for your tank, a pair is enough) and small peaceful algae eating fishes like otto cats as clean up crew.

I have done some research apparently ottos need 3 ft tank min so dun think they will be happy in my 1.5. as for nerite snails they are cute but pple say they wont eat leftovers only algae unlike the mystery snail that eats everything. Yamato shrimp is a consideration but it wont bother my tetras rite? have heard horror stories of bigger shrimps eating yhe tetras

If you see c328 they put Otto in their betta tank and it's ok. I used to put it in my betta tank too. Unless you want it to breed and all. If not as long as they live and eat algae can already. 1.5ft is more than enough

In the process of learning. painful but fun!

    Re: Setup for shrimp tank

If you are having shrimps like Cherry, I do not see a reason why you should not have Neon Tetra.

Firstly, Cherry are like rabbit, they multiple fast even if some of the shrimplets got eaten.
Trust me, even with Neon, your Cherry will still boom like price of Singapore housing for the past 15years.

With my experience of having Cherry with Galaxy, Neon and Cardinal, they ignore shrimplets that are more than a week old.

Most fish of Neon size don't really bothered Adult cherry and they will only do that when both are after the same food.

    Re: Setup for shrimp tank

Here are a few reasons why I think your tank is not suitable for shrimps,

    1. Tetras eat shrimps, have enough of them and they will hunt your shirmp in packs. I do not have experience keeping tetras with shrimps in 1ft or 2 ft tanks but I have kept shrimps in a 3ft planted tank and have seen my tetras attack the shrimps in packs. If you want to feed your tetras I suggest you keep ghost shrimps, they are normally bred to be used as food.

2, Your substrate is a mix of all sorts of gravel and coral chips. Highly likely that you will have moulting problems due to water hardness issues.

    3. There are not really many hiding places for the shrimps. They will be very stressed by the tetras.

    1) I don't think it will be that case as he is not going to have over 30 Neon Tetra in 2ft. Also, you must have been starving your fish to go after shrimp. By the way, what shrimps are you talking about and what size? I am currently running another 2 ft tank with FR and CRS. All the fish leave them alone unless they are fighting for the same food. I don't recommend ghost shrimp. Have you ever watch them clinging onto your fish? They can be a pest especially at night where they will try to nip at your fish. As I said before, I have 10 Neon in 1 ft and 2ft and the cherry population is always growing, you can see the 1 week old shrimplets feeding on top of moss and the Neon Tetra just ignored them.

    2) I agree.

    3) possible.
