re-use the old media
re-use the old media
Agree with above. But best is to transfer within 15 mins as the bb might dried up.

But if changing from hof to canister?
If no choice I may setup another tank to cycle first then transfer

I recently did a transfer from hob to canister and everything went well. These are the steps I took
1) Transfer some biomedia from hob to new canister.
2) Run both hob and new canister for more than a week.
3) Transfer all bio media to new canister. Other stuff that cannot be transfered (e.g. in cartridge form) I will drop it in the tank and will leave it for next 3 weeks.
You can never be too careful. Maybe experts here can contribute other tips.
That's a pretty good and interesting way, maybe I can give it a shot
If you are doing in advance, suggest you run the canister on the same tank for a month to let the beneficial bacteria populate the media in the canister. You can shut off the hob after this.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
