nobody can say safe or not cause since you tank is soiless. Just try to use alittle cause a ph shock will kill your CRS also. Good luck lowering.

Put some Catappa leaves. It is meant for softening of water to reduce PH. Put it at your own risk as mentioned by axe30 when you try to dramatically bringing down the PH.

current tank is empty ,no shrimp yet, will wait till everything suitable, then i will start adding crs. So soil is the best way to reduce ph?

I see that you are new to this forum. I guess you are new to shrimp hobby too.
Try not to do soilless setup as ph value can be harder to control.
just use soil. It would make things easier. Of course you need to cycle longer. Cause of the ammonia released by the soil. If your soil contain ammonia
    still learning the hard way!!

any reason why you do not wish to use soil?

anyway this hobby is not just plug and play. sometimes it take a bit of experimenting to get the combo right, not just by reading. it is fun to gain the knowledge along the way too and you may find out something new. don't give up easily.

Brand is a preference. ADA is an option, but have to cycle very long.

armourshrimp36 bro, if you want a cheap soil, go for the GEX shrimp soil but be aware that it doesn't last very long in terms of it pH lowering ability.
Before you even start doing all sort of major things, can I stop you for a minute to ask some questions?

    1. What is your tap water's pH?
    2. The volume of your tank?
    3. How are you measuring/monitoring your pH?
    4. Do you have a chiller and what is the temperature of the water?

CRS is very different from RCS and it is not good to rush into it especially if you're not using soil. Maybe experienced people had been trying to do without soil for a long time and even those who succeeded tend to have something in their sump or filters to lower pH. Some others failed and waste life and money.

I highly support bro navanod's concerns regards to keeping CRS. There are alot of things to take note and rushing into it will not help you enjoy as CRS are much sensitive and requires more attention. Dont rush into it if not you will be wasting money when shrimps keep dying. Read up the stickies in the invertebrate thread. Seek for more advice from experienced keepers, they share your plans and budget to better setup your tank.

Just to add on, a chiller is really necessary for crs IMO. Singapore weather is too hot, the shrimps will survive but will be pretty inactive in higher temperatures. Maybe try some RCS again 1st.

i use tetra test kit,ph is 7, tank is L 2ft xW 1.5ft . I use diy chiller, i use foambox, put my canister filther in the foam box,put 3inch of water in the foam box,put 4 bottle of coke bottle that i freez in the fridge in the foambox. Temp is about 25 to 26,but got to replace the coke bottle everyday.

    Re: ph 7.0 for crs?

Use a bag of filter peat in a small amount first and let it naturally acidify your water to the required pH levels. Soil-less tanks are workable, just need patience and a fair bit of luck. DIY chiller methods will get more troublesome for you over time, so if you really want to keep CRS, invest in a good chiller for your 2ft tank. At least if you decide to switch to something else in the future, you can reuse the chiller for a planted tank or other setups.

You are actually doing quite ok bro. I was half worried you would be try to do this in a less than 1ft tank with a small hang on filter.
Speaking of which, you may want to consider getting one to put the peat that Stormhawk recommended. Will make it easier to adjust the amount and remove if necessary. Without a digital pH meter, you would have to be very hardworking to test when using peat. Once the buffering KH in the water is gone, pH plunges quite quickly and can fall to 5.5 or lower.

On a side note, how long can the frozen bottles last? One entire day?

Been there done that..... Anyway hot spelll coming unless your tank glass thickness is 10mm-12mm. If not 4 coke bottle will last about 8 hrs and the temp swing will be from 24-28 thru out. Chiller price from the market is rather afforable if it is electrical bill than mod it to external probe. Unless you stay at home most of the time to keep changing the bottle during the hot spell. If not your shrimps will most likely suffer. If you still want to contiune the DIY than suggest you add a fan to help out. Have fun DIY is the way but sometimes i end up way more costly
