i have read that to age water it has to be left to evaporate? does that mean no lid or cover to prevent spillage?

Huh? Never heard of this before. Evaporates it and use it as distilled water?
My method is always by adding some anti chlorine into the water, mix them well and leave it overnight.

So far, no casualties. But of course, leaving it the longer the better i guess.

    Re: Queries on Aging water

You can use a pail or those huge bottles they use for office water dispensers, or a tub with a lid. Add the usual dechlorinator to fresh tap water in the container, then let it circulate with a small water pump. You can opt to leave a small bag of zeolite or activated carbon to absorb any leftover impurities. Usually, it's best to leave it this way for about 3 days to 1 week. Some people do an 80% water change on an existing "commando" tank, fill up with fresh tap water and add dechlorinator, then use this water to do water changes for other tanks after a few days.

Yup, use a pail like stormhawk suggest. Or rather, get yourself another tank for aging the water also helps. just make sure that the container does not hold any dirty water previously. E.g pail that you used for mopping the floor... is a no-no

For me, covering it up is just to ensure that dust will not goes into the container.

    Re: Queries on Aging water

1.5L bottle should be ok but ...
    1) is 1.5L aged water enough for you?
    2) the water may turn stale easily as the opening for fresh air is too narrow
    3) not recommended

Try to use those big tupperware or ice-cream tubs...

Sorry but i got no knowledge on Peat Moss.

    Re: Queries on Aging water

Ya cos I'm using a small tank. If I use a tub, won't it be stale too as I will be cover it with its lid too? Cause I have a dog at home and I don't want fur or dust getting in to the water.

    Re: Queries on Aging water

That is why you need a small pump in the tub to circulate the water around. Even with the lid closed the water will still be circulated during the aging period.

As for peat moss, you can opt for filter peat instead, which comes in granular form. Put some in a mesh filter bag and place it in your filter or in a spot where there is some water flow. This peat will cause your tank water to be stained brown, like tea, which is basically the blackwater "effect". This lowers your pH over time.

    Re: Queries on Aging water

    Hi Leonhwr,

how's your shrimps doing (compared to your friend's)? Hope they are adapting well by now. To age water, it all depends on you how long (can be from overnight to 3 or more days) you can leave the water (with anti-chlorine/ chloramine added) overnight. Covering up with a lid is good as it prevents spillage & accidental addition of things inside... What I normally do is to stir the water in my pail a few times so as to aerate the water a bit during the aging process.

Using 1.5L may be more tedious & troublesome as mentioned. For me, what I do instead is I transfer my Aged water to a few 1.5L PET bottles & then start aging another pail of water for the next cycle. The aged ones in the 1.5L bottles will be used over the next few days for WC - so by then, my next pail of water is aged & ready for use again & there is a continuous ready supply of aged water [that also explains why my wife is complaining about the bill for water usage @ home is higher...]

Hope the above helps. Do whatever that suits your existing situation permits so long as you are able to maintain & enjoy this hobby at the same time.

    Re: Queries on Aging water

Hey haha. They're getting better. I have got myself test kits to test the water and been trying to improve te water parameters. I see. Right now I actually went to Seaview to buy their water and left it in a pail with ocean free anti chlorine.

I got so many things unsure of about many stuffs like canister all that and lots of other equipment and stuffs. Lol cos I'm planning to start a bigger tank and let it cycle for a month.

No worries bro, you'll learn along the way (just depends on whether your learning curve is a gentle or steep one...) You'll get loads of help in here (AQ) from the helpful bro's & sis's advice (but also do some homework/ research on this hobby before you get anything - especially livestocks - so as to minimise your monetary loss & wastage of efforts...) Remember I told you previously, you've to go slow in order to enjoy this hobby to the fullest...

    Re: Queries on Aging water

You can use a smaller drum if you find space is a premium. Try those water dispenser bottles I mentioned. Something like this:

Preferably without a handle molded in. They're great for aging water in, or you can use some other big plastic tub like those Toyogo containers, especially the larger ones.
