I'm in the process of cycling my tank and notice that there are white jellish thing forming around the bogwood. Any bro can advise if this white jellish is harmful to shrimp?do I need to remove it before I add my shrimp after cycling complete?

Hi Bro. Yes I've encountered this before and it kill many of my shrimps and the plants I tied to it. Did you soak the wood before putting it in the tank? If you did, you might have missed seeing the jellish thing forming whilst soaking.

I fellow hobbyist told me its sap from the wood which was not properly dried out by the supplier. But I don't know how true this is.

What I did was remove the wood and soak it in hot boiling water. If your wood can fit into a pot or wok even better, just cook it in hot water.

There after, soak it in normal tap water and leave it for a few days. See if any of the white jellish stuff appears again. If it does, treat it with boiling water again until none of those jelly appear when you soak the wood in water. Then you can return it to the tank.

Painful experience for me. It killed all the Glosso I backbreakingly planted... Hope this helps you.

Photo would be great, my guess is fungus, harmless. Otos and yamato shrimps will eat it, SAE as well probably.

The slime or sap like secretion from the wood is unknown, some people say is harmless to shrimps. Better play safe side better, to quarantine the wood for a week to see and test before adding into tank.

I usually use hot water to rinse the drift/bog wood before soaking in water for a week. Then after a week test the water I soak the wood with no ammonia or nitrate then I introduce into the tank. Using hotwater to rinse can kill off any insects or critters which lay their eggs in the wood and also reduce the tannins when intro to the tank. Just to share tannins is the yellowish, brownish coloration that the wood will cause your water to change color after soaking for awhile, to remove the tannin color you can use activated carbon.

I learnt my lesson, when I intro a bonsai tree after thinking soaking for a week in a quarantine tank without testing I intro into my shrimp tank and caused the death of all my precious CRS...

Thats exactly what i am having in my tank, but yours look bad compare to mine . Mine only have just a few patches on the soil only, i do not have any bog or driftwood , so i guess these jellish thing are fungus.

Just put in snails , otos or yamatos and try.

Should be fungus, one other way is to use a small air hose and siphon out as much as you can.

Did that but they grow back soon after a day or two. Seems like my oto and Yamato also not eating that. Maybe we take the advice to boil it with hot water. There goes any effort of the java fern tie.

That look different than funggus that i have in mind. Fungus that i seen before is a lump that cover wood surface. It does not spread to other thing. Yours look more like spider web

Re: Jellish White mold on bogwood

Could it be that the cloudy clumps are actually sap leeching. I have a piece of bogwood that has been used for a good year plus and yet at the base of it I find a lump of cloudy (like a very light teh) thing after I moved it to a new tank. It is only at the base and no where else.

Re: Jellish White mold on bogwood

I had the same problem, I think it is fungus.
Siphon is not the solution, they will grow back.
    Otos and Amano ignore it.

I think best to take it out, and scrub it really good.
If you want to be safe, boiled it and make sure no more of the white stuff is in the tank for a couple of days before putting the wood back.
It happened more on the kind of driftwood you got and it does spread.
