Just to share some pictures of my A. Caca triple red who have grown up and fat, but too bad although there have been some spawn with the female, the eggs were somehow eaten the following. It is just a cheap entry level Apisto but if you treat it with good food and clean water, it still can have stunning colours.

    Not Happy, is it? Haha

Nice looking fish. But i am quite curious as to why the black stripe only stop at the middle and not extended all the way to the end? Could it be signs of too much inter-breeding?

A very good question that I have no answer to. Maybe the Apisto expert like Stormhawk, Marle, Bernard... can answer to this "genes" question.

Haha, I bought it when it was still young and small. Now after all the high-protein food, it has become fat and old in fish age, but I like its colour. Wong, you want to join in the Apisto fun too? It is actually much nicer in the tank but my photo-taking skill sucks.

Re: Sharing my Male A. Caca Triple Red

Farm bred fish occasionally are fed with growth hormones, but this is dependent on the farms. Sometimes they pump the fish for growth too fast that they do not fully develop their potential but look big for their size. Don't be fooled by the colors either. Some show splendid color not because they have good genes, but because they are fed color enhancing foods prior to sale.

This broken black line thing can be seen in the majority of the last few caca I saw, at C328 and elsewhere, so probably a sign of declining genetic diversity. That means the farms never really bother to introduce caca from other sources into their breeding stock. Another thing that came up was the over-sized lower or upper jaw on some specimens.

Good explanation shared by Stormhawk. You are right about the over-sized lower or upper jaw part, which in my caca is the lower jaw. I ever saw it swallow whole small guppy like a snake dislocating its jaws. A scary scene but a lesson learnt.
