I know some reef tanks typically have monster turnover rate of over 80x /hour , but how about the general freshwater or planted tanks?

For turnover rate, is it as simple as dividing filter flow rate with tank volume?

So in my case 440L/h (Eheim 2213) divided by 28L => 15.7x /hour turnover rate?

If I'm not wrong, there's a difference (but relationship) between flow, turbulence & turn-over rate? Like one can have gentle flow but huge turnover rate? There's a video on these on Tunze's website but it's not the most entertaining video, but if you are interested in the specifics of these concept, perhaps you can take a look on Tunze's site.

For me, I'm looking for high turnover, but low turbulence, i.e. for "fresh" water to reach all parts of the planted areas, but nothing gets uprooted, so to speak. I still do not know how to achieve this, though.

Being a beginner, I basically just follow the popular ADA style "gyre" laminar flow with lily pipe. Needless to say, this method works like charm.

But the thing is how much is considered high turnover rate?

    eheim 2226 950l/h on a 115L tank .... 9x.

Using a lily pipe or T-jet as output will not cause so much turbulence in your tank.

ah sorry about that. You can take a look at Eheim Wide Jet pipe. That was the one i was talking about.
