    Hi,

I am currently using Aquazonic PL-60 now and was wondering can i just change the light tube to LED tube instead? Would it work that way? Trying to reduce the heat and also electricity for the lights. Any ideas on this?

    Would this work?

    Thank you in advance!

Re: Convert PL to LED light

    you can do that if the following conditions are met;
    a) the LED tube input voltage covers 240V
    b) the LED tube connector matches your current light set

usually such direct replacement tubes have much lower light output compared to a florescent PL tube.

Re: Convert PL to LED light

Thanks Thomas for the reply. I wonder if i should change the tube to Osram 6000k or Phillips 6500k? I only have this set for 2 months. Should i change the tube to get growth of plants such as glosso? By the way Aquazonic PL-60 original tube is 6500K or 10000k? Sorry as still very new to this.

Re: Convert PL to LED light

Or should i just change the whole light set to FL (T5HO) set instead as i think the PL light seems to generate a lot of heat for my 50cm cube tank. If i change to 4tube 24w T5HO shouldn't that generate more heat due to the wattage increase? Sorry for so many question. Very lost.

Tyro, you should be able to
Find some indication in the existing pl tube.
Osram do come in 6500k also, I will go for what is easier to obtain if both are the same output.

T5ho has some heat as well, especially when your going for higher wattage the heat likely be going up as well.

    Hi Felix!

Not sure you remember me, i came to your place to "harvest" before. Haha. I tried to look for the indication but can't seem to find it. All i got was it is the PL-60 with 55 watt and 240v - 50hz. More blur. Haha. I have never change the tube, maybe that is why the plants are not growing well. The glosso i got from you only grow super tall until i gave up on it. So you suggest i just change the tube instead of changing the whole thing to T5HO? Going to try glosso again.

Re: Convert PL to LED light

both philips and osram are quite close to each other and you would go wrong with either.
both t5 and pl will introduce heat into your tank; higher total wattage will introduce more heat.
    10000k light is bluish.

How do you know when to change the tube? Does the color change or any indicator?

Re: Convert PL to LED light

I think it is time to change the whole set. My switch seems to have spoil. It takes a few try to turn the lights on and I use a timer for the light but the light does not seem to turn on when the timer is up. I check with other electronic devices and the timer is working fine. Any idea if i can change the switch(DIY) or is the ballast?

Re: Convert PL to LED light

most will change PL or FL tubes after about 1 year in order to maintain light intensity.
however, the tubes can be used until they fail to light up anymore or when blink constantly.

    Haha. It is ok.
Most likely search for T5 light set as i am starting a new project soon. Was thinking putting in stones. Any idea what stone is the best not to change the water parameter as i only have drift wood now only. Saw a lot of stones at Seaview but not sure which is better.

DW and Stones all good, the picking and using of stones is the person.
If you have little talent in the arts and zen sector.. we can shake hand

The last time i went seaview, left little... like a small rubble for the type i want....

Haha. Me too felix. Fail in art. I guess only trial and error.

Now i am toying with the idea of having a normal bulb with like E27 fixture with a 6500k bulb. Would that be sufficient for plant growth? Going for moss and APP foreground plant. Want to try something new other the regular aquarium lighting.

No need to toy with the idea. Around the time after I joined have already spotted people doing that. But directly mounting it on the hood.

The hood modified with exaust fans and aluminum foil on the insides as extra reflectors.

I'm intending to buy clip on lights with reflectors. Advanced planning for my low tech tank.

Re: Convert PL to LED light

Went down to Clementi to look for some rocks but got no idea what is what. Can only identify the lava rock. Haha. I am looking for rocks that would not affect the water parameter. Any idea which is that? At the same time got 2 plants that i got no idea what are they. Is the green one water wisteria?

Re: Convert PL to LED light

Where the rocks are concerned, if you have some vinegar, drop a few drops on it. If it fizzles, it's not inert. Typically, it's a hit and miss kind of thing where rocks are concerned, especially since you can't do the vinegar test at LFS.

First plant I forgot the name but second plant is not Wisteria, should be Ceratopteris thalictroides.

Re: Convert PL to LED light

I am searching for led lights now but am very confuse what is the most important thing for aquarium plants. Should I be looking at lumens, colour temperature or color rendering index (cri) ? I am in between two bulbs now. One with colour temperature 6500k while the other have cri 80, 800 lumens but only 2700k. Which is better?
