Yes possible...
There are a few ways of doing it...
Putting sponge at the side of the glass partition..
is it possible to partition a 3ft shrimp tank into 2 by simply putting a sheet of glass / acrylic in such a way that the bottom is touching the substrate and the top is above water level?
assuming that the edges can be sealed so that shrimps cannot swim across, can water flow through from below the substrate?

Your substrate would choke in a matter of days and one side would become a waterfall, cascading into the other side from the top of your partition.
You can get some inspirations from this thread

or from what I tried

What i did was to get a y joint and split my inlet and outlet into 2, so both side of partitions will still have filtration.
Yes using airtubes and sponge will work fine..however is that by using sponge, you might end up training shrimps that climbs..and it is no joking matter that it manages to cling onto the sponge 5cm above the water level and jumps over to the other partition..
I had one that practise wall climbing and airborne to the extent that others(shrimps) are learning from it.. And i am not joking
Aspiring to be.
Or you can drill some holes on the center partition and cover with stainless steel mesh or fine netting. this will let teh water balance up, however you rainbar need to be able to let water flow to both partition.

thanks for the links and suggestions...
i am thinking of partitioning my thank so that i can do "selective breeding" with a single setup.
the using wiremesh to cover the holes of the separator seems like a good idea - as long as water can flow freely the parameter should remain the same
baby shrimps swimming through the wire mesh should not be an issue - can re-group them when they grow bigger![]()
Maybe you can do something like this.... And the shrimplets will never get through as well...

This is how I partition my 2ft tank:
- 2 pcs of acrylic frames (can choose whatever color you like) purchased at the hardware shop near Petmart in Serangoon North
- stainless steel mesh purchased in hardware shop in Kelantan lane area or you can get plastic netting from the Serangoon North hardware shop, however shrimplets can get through.
- 2 of those plastic file binder spine at ArtFriend
Just sandwich the plastic net or stainless steel mesh between the 2 acrylic frames, then use the plastic file binder spine to secure the 2 sides. After that you just slot into your tank. Total less than $50.

Great minds think alike!! So similar to mine...just that I use Silicon to keep the sandwich snug and air tube to keep the panel in place.

This looks great, are the acrylic frames available in different sizes? Just need to tell the uncle acrylic divider?
As you can see the bros here have very neat ways of partitioning their tanks. One thing that I would suggest is that you don't partition the tank all the way to the top. That way if it clogs for whatever reason, the water will just overflow into the next partition and not outside the tank.
Took me 2 weeks to get everything sorted out and I'm glad it's all over. Now this is a template for me to follow until I get a rackmaybe the next time you come over to my office, I share with you the way I do it and how it can be better.
Not very big compared to the bros here lor... Just a 4ft tank part into 4.
Bro, actually mine is a DIY panel. You'll need to have your measurements of the tank's internal dimensions and overall height of the panel you want. In fact, I believe even for bro Gryphon, a sketch or template of the panel have to be drawn out with dimensions annotated on it so that the storekeeper can follow and cut accordingly. For mine, I send the entire drawing to my acrylic supplier.
You will need 2 acrylic panels to sandwich 1 stainless steel mesh. A few ways to design the panels, depending on how your setup is like and how you'll want the water to flow. I have 3 different designs for different setups and purposes.

Just to share another design which I attempted to direct the water flow. A lily pipe is required to make it effective though.

Looks neat bro Matt. May want to get another tank to be partitoned like this.
Actually with a big stainless steel mesh like that, I hardly can think of any situation that it would clog up 100% but good caution to note, besides thinking on how to install the rain bar above the partition, if sharing between 2 parts.
I have 1 tank with acrylic only and no cut-outs for meshes. Tested and still running, the panel is so tightly done that it bends slightly and water still balances out as there are and always will be tiny gaps between panel edge and glass. The shrimplets are too big to pass through though.
And to answer the other question I missed out earlier on; the tanks are all filled up though the "shrimpizens" are not many, again compared to the bros here. I'm still a noob.![]()
