understand that soil 'expires' after 1-2 years and will no longer able to buffer PH...

what do i need to plan for if i intends to continue my shrimp hobby?

currently i only have one 3ft setup

don't think can just add new soil directly while shrimps are in the tank right?

does that mean i need to have another setup so that i can migrate the shrimps while i rebuild the old thank?

    what do you guys do?

You can opt to use ketapang leaves, or other methods of keeping the pH down like Mosura pH Down.

If you decide to redo the tank, try to have a spare tank prepared in advance with just the water from the original tank and a working and fully cycled filter that was running off the original tank. This is to hold your shrimps for the time being while you are doing the rescaping etc and waiting for the cycling of the tank to complete.

One of my friend use peat after his soil expired and his shrimps are still surviving. So i guess its should be alright.

Yes like Quinn suggested peats however you till need to watch i use this method peats can last about 3-6 that is considering your Water change frequency etc. Another alternative temp shift them out for a few days in pail with existing water and bubbles than top soils to the above layer.

    Long term still is reset.

to have another tank means another set of equipment (filter / chiller etc) and cycling new tank will take weeks again...

Not really you can tranfer all your equipment over there is not requirement for new set cause you are going to decomm and reset the existing tank so no equipment needed. Cycling you just dump in sponge filter to cycle to get it to cycle stage. As your equipement is with the spare so once cycle done you shift back all the equipment.

Avoid the urge to dump into alot of soil and hoping that it'll last longer. It'll just be a waste of soil as the bottom soil will have very little contact with moving water and will just encourage anaerobic bacteria growth.

Nope, but if its crumbling to dust/mud, it's probably no use to you.

Try not to buy second hand soil. You might end up spending more money buying a new bag later. Not to mention the additional headaches.
