    Hi Anne,

OK you asked about the gravel... most of us use lonestar gravel which cost $20+ for a really big bag (very heavy) get someone big strong and friendly to help carry... you might even need 2 bags depending on how thick you want your gravel.
As for the fertilizer, many brands are available on the market, though the one rainbow might recommend would be dennerle. Its good but expensive. I think the aunty at clementi328 is still the cheapest for dennerle substrate. I'm not sure if you'll read this in time, but the substrate is probably the most crucial step in a planted tank cuz its the most difficult thing to change if you get it wrong.

As for putting fish in, guppies are nice fish to have, but for a planted tank setup, you'll need to introduce some algae eaters... 3 commonly used algae eaters are the Oto, Siamese Algae eaters, and shrimps (yamato/malayan). If you have the patience, plant your plants, and introduce the algar eaters first. As long as you don't feed them, they'll do a good job of removing algae from your plants... after maybe a month (yes its a long time), you can slowly introduce more fish.

ANyway, you'll probably make mistakes with your startup, but as long as you're willing to learn, its only a matter of time before you're the proud owner of a lovely planted tank. Welcome to the community!

    Hi to all waterfarmers. [:]
I'm new to this forum and interested in setting up a planted tank.
I'm new to this planting stuff and hope to learn from u guys.
I have a 3ft tank (which used to house few frontosa)which i intended to use for planting. Any shop other than the one at thomson to recommend?
Btw, can I use old gravel ie. 'from an earlier failed attempt to set up a planted tank' for the new tank??
I do wish to be able to salvage some of the old stuff.

    hi zakuII

    welcome to our forum.....[]

besides the one at thomson road you could try at Serangoon North Ave 1....that is where rainbow, petmart, and taiwan is .....there is also another one but cannot remember the name though?

The sand that you mentioned that you have used before.....have you dumped any fertiliser before? If yes, it maybe best not to but if you must, rinse it well. The gravel must be lime free and the diameter of the grain should be between 1.5 to 2mm in diameter....max at 2.5.....

what other 'old stuff' do you have?

    again welcome to our forum...[]
