It's far more simple to lay over new gravel on top of the old. However, re-doing the whole tank may be the better option. If you re-used the current tank water and let the filter run in the bucket with the tank water, it should not be a massive problem. In that sense, it would be crucial for you to have a proper plan on what would be contained in the new layout before going on with your reset.
That way, you can probably plan for a layer of coral sand at the bottom, followed by an inert gravel over it that forms the top-most layer. With this you can also utilise a UGF system in addition to your current filtration.

Hi guys! Been pretty busy but I managed to finally find time to change my tank's subtrate. I decided not to try the UGF and stick to what I'm familiar with. Changed the white gravel to black. Although its not as Paradise-ish anymore, I think it still looks ok... Plus, my 'library' is finally done up so the tank has been relocated to a cosier spot there.
Close up of the tank now:

I just sprained my neck trying to look at your "library"![]()
Question! Is that a library, or a bar counter?![]()
Need something to scratch that itchy hand of mine.
Don't act smart. Be smart!
Guys.... don't laugh at me la. Those are my hubby's collection of Absolute Vodka. And I have a lot of friends who like to deposit their liquor at my place then come for makan and drinking and mahjong session. The champagnes are bought by my hubby when he travels and we drink only on special occasions. He keeps the bottles (I dunno why?!).
The library is not filled yet. I haven't moved back my childhood storybooks from my Aunty's place. This is my sanctuary!
And here's the upright photo. Sorry for all the sprained necks!

Hmmmm...you may want to look out for bowing of the wooden shelf under your tank...
Yeap I will. But should be ok because my contractor took the weight of the tank into consideration before putting it together. Thats why the shelves look like individual boxes to spread out the weight rather than a conventional looking shelf.
