I guess the smallest filter you can find will be the HOF (Hang On filter)
You might want to consider taking the measurement and drop by any LFS to check it out.
Hi, if you are keeping betta, i think that a sponge filter will be more suitable as bettas generally prefer low/no current water.
Cheers!

Hi all. Thanks for your reply. Yea I was lookin at the gex slim S. I think it would fit. Width of my tank is 19 cm. but just worried the flow might cause too much disturbance. So was wondering if there's a smaller filter.
Anyone with a gex slim s can give comments?
You can get a GEX Rokaboy Compact or S, they're very small & dont take up space

Roka Boy Compact is really small, perfect for that Marina tank. I have 2 of these Compacts and they are great for the smallest plastic tanks.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone! The roka boy looks good! Many thanks, really.
There is also a small sponge filter from UP brand that may suit your purposes. I think they cost $2.50 at C328. L-shaped tube with the lower end attached to a rubber sucker. You fix it to the side of the tank. Problem is that this sucker can drop off after some time.

Ok I just realized I totally forgot the air pump. Any recommended brand or values I should be looking for when buying a pump? Eg how strong the pump is etc.
Oh and would I be using a powerhead or an air pump for this? I read that air pumps will cause disturbance on the surface of the water but bettas prefer calm water surfaces?
If you are only using a single sponge filter, a small air pump will do. I used a GEX mini air pump for quite some time and it's still working. Did not cost me much either. Most of these small air pumps cost between $5 to $15 depending on brand and output.

Thanks for your replies man. Appreciate it. Looks like I might get a slightly bigger tank too. Curse this tank and it's awkward thin shape.
How effective is the roka boy compact at removing waste from water? I havent used one before and I'm quite skeptical.
It's really a midget filter so don't expect much from it. Fairly okay for a small tank with a single betta. You can do a water change once a week. The little UP brand sponge filter I mentioned is at the second row of shelves from the front of the shop. If you enter from the left entry way, turn right on the second rack where they have the fish food in small canisters, look below the food rack, it's closer to the right side of the shop along with some other sponge filters. The Roka Boy Compact should be at the same rack as well.
FYI, the UP sponge filter is about twice the size of the Roka Boy Compact. If you find the Compact too tiny, get the Size S Roka Boy.

I am a great fan of hang-on filters and other filters too.
But if I have the nice 3L tank that you bought for your one treasured Betta, I will not bother to fit any filters or pumps at all, and no substrate, no lamp too.
Any solid matter will settle on the bottom. All you need do is to siphon out the waste at the bottom every day and change 20% water (top up after siphoning). Put in a simple plant for attractiveness.![]()
LIFE IS UNBEARABLE WITHOUT A FISH TANK!!!
