Eastpoint Mall's Pet Safari staff is DUMB!

I had to say this because I wanted to look for PH-down for my tank as I've used up mine.

As a convenience, I decided to go to Pet Safari since I'm living in Simei.

I ask the staff at the fish counter: "Do you have pH-Down?"

The staff said: "Why do you need it?"

I ask again: "My question is: Do you have pH-Down?"

The staff replied"pH-Down? There are this X product, Y product, etc"

Getting annoyed, I ask again: "DO YOU HAVE pH-Down?"

Finally he said: "NO".

The best thing is the pH-Down solution is right beside him!

I shake my head and walk off. I rather drive to Tampines Blk 201 and buy the stuff...

That maybe why many hobbists stick to the same LFS that they are familiar with for helpful and reliable services and advices even if the price is a bit higher. From my experience with dealing with couple of LFS, some staffs do not know the products and fishes well as it is just another job to them. You really need to know what you are looking for and where in the shop is the product you want.

sorry I am probably as dumb as the staff but if you know the Ph down solution is beside him, why still need to ask him ah?

anyway, pet safari/pet lover center and all that focus more on dogs/hamsters where they make more money.... so not very knowledgeable about fish stuff.

That is the standard tactic. When don't know what the customer is talking about, try to confuse him! Hahaha. Similar situation happened to me but my answer to the sales person was, "In other words you don't know what I am talking about lah" and I walked out.

Anyway, chill. No point getting upset over things like this. I guess you should know by now that shop staff do NOT necessarily know their stuff... especially in a low profit-margin trade like aquarium hobby. The shops are not making enough to pay for knowledgeable staff. Plus the turn over rate for such staff means none of them sticks around long enough to learn anything.

Better to go those small proprietor operated shops where the owner has been in the hobby or trade long enough.

I understand. That's why I never get anything from pet safari. It's only when I really need something urgent, I'll opt for convenience by going there.

But I think this is too ridiculous, his face showed as though he knows what he is talking about, but he's making a fool of himself.

that is why i go LFS i know will have answers then i ask.
If not i rather browse myself.

Staff may not know every single product under their retail is for what to do what.
Expect too high, then likely they rather say no. then having to deal with you.
If he does not act at least abit knowledgeable, how can he sell stuff... trust that they were employed when they DO know something.

I once went to NA to buy Badun powder, when i ask Mr Chan he also needed sometime to digest what i wanted.
It is beside the counter, he didn't remember it before i spotted it myself.

Next time bring sample, that is the best way if have box even staff who just started can find a box matching.


BTW: i think when he said no, he gave up trying to guess what PH-down is and do they sell it & just wanted to "smoke" you.

I was talking to Pet Safari staff and was told that the Aquatic Section in Pet Safari is not managed by PLC but by AMB International which is their tenant.

The things there are pretty pricey too. Best to look elsewhere unless really in dire need!

Those shops are for the general public who have no idea what they are buying and buy from equally unaware staff, they probably tell you that pH down is good for lake malawi fishes. Sadly, this is a common trait in almost all businesses, best part is that people still buy and the business also prosper.
