    Does Biohome increase pH?

I was worried that my filter cannot handle my increased bioload as i have added 25 neon tetras to my tank. So I added 2kg of biohome today and the ph jumped from ~5.6 to ~6.6.

Any bros have similar experiences of ph increasing after adding biohome?

Don't think that it'll increase the ph. How big is your tank? Did you do anything prior to adding in? Where you add into? Overhead filter or canister?

I dont think Biohome will alter your ph value. Do a recheck and see if it kept rising.. I have 5kg biohome in my current tank and ph value remained unchanged.

    Re: Does Biohome increase pH?

My tank size is 2* 1.5ft by 1ft and my substrate is new amazonie. The gh is 4 and kh is 2~3. I didnt do anything special prior to adding the biohome.

I am using a df-700 canister which initially had 1 tray of biohome. After changing the substrate, the ph fell to 5.5 and remained stable at that value with slight fluctuation. In order to add 2 more trays of biohome to the df-700, took away the black bio mat and the CRs that was in the df-700, and then transferred the CR to a dummy filter. Then i added 1 piece of white wool mat to the dummy filter in order to make it function as a prefilter.

After adding 2kg of biohome, the wool mat and the dummy canister(i did clean it beforehand as there are lava rock chips inside), the ph raised from 5.5 to 6.6.

My filter medias made up of biohome. They didn't make my ph raise for your info, but did you top up any water after u add in the new biohome?

Checked again this morning, afternoon and just now. Ph remained at 6.5.

I did top up water but the values are obtained before i top up the water. Anyway, values remained at 6.5 even after topping up. I topped up ard 3l of distilled water.

    Re: Does Biohome increase pH?

Someone needs to really do some proper tests on Biohome. Both for inertness and the claim that it can cultivate anaerobic bacteria.

According to the product info, Biohome is made of sintered glass, or in lay person's terms, powdered glass that is heated to make into lumps/pellets. This process creates very fine pores in the lumps/pellets.
Based on its base material, glass, the media should be inert and not affect GH or pH.
Eheim's SubstratPRO is likewise made of the same material and it didn't do anything to anyone's pH so far.

For the price Biohome commands, I would expect the material and QC to be good enough that nothing funny gets into the media.

kiantkh, is your Biohome red or grey? Brand new or 2nd hand?

    Re: Does Biohome increase pH?

Or could it be that you having a tank too loaded with fishes and the PH dropped? After adding in the biohome, the PH went back normal? As i personally encounter my 5ft tank drop PH when too overstocked with fishes. By the way, what are you keeping?

Good point Stormz. pH may drop when the tank's bioloads are high, as the breakdown of ammonia also results in release of hydrogen ions.

just like new setup using ADA Amazonia. High Ammonia leaching into water causing pH drop to around 5.5 but after finished cycle, ammonia converted to Nitrate, pH increase and stabilize around 6.4. In other word you biohome have more surface area, more BB colonies and Ammonia converted to NO3 faster. Just guessing here

Navanod, thanks for the kind comments, I experience it myself at home but here in this thread it's just a guess on what happen to kiantkh's situation.

    Re: Does Biohome increase pH?

I am keeping 25 small neon tetra, 4 adult neon tetra, 30+ cherry, 4 otto, 1 bristlenose starlight pleco and 6 crs. Tank has quite a lot of mosses, fissidens and frogbits.

Regarding the ammonia being converted to nitrate, can it happen in the span of 1 hour? I thought the bacteria need 1 day to double in population? pH of 5.5 is measured before I put in the biohome and 1hr after i put in the biohome. Any bro can confirm? Since it will be Bioload issue if the ammonia can indeed be processed within 1 hr.

Today's measurement show a ph of 6.4 in the afternoon and 6.6 just now.
Edit: Did a topup of 1l with declorinated tap water aged in peats.

    Re: Does Biohome increase pH?

If the water conditions is acceptable with the livestock, i wouldn't do much adjustments. Your tank is more to planted or shrimp tank?

    Side track a bit.
DF700 is 750L/H right, after discounting the bends and height with the prefilter i think the flow rate might be left about 550-600L/H?

    Re: Does Biohome increase pH?

Tank is mainly shrimp tank. But plants take up pretty much of the tank in order to provide hiding places for the shrimps. The shrimps and fishes seems to survive the increase of 1 ph so I did not bother doing any adjustments. However, the huge increase of ph in such a short period of time is the main cause of my concern so i could avoid such things from happening the next time round since i understand that huge fluctuations in ph is not healthy to the fauna inside the tank.

Flow rate 820l/h. But I connect to chiller, another dummy canister as prefilter so i think the flow is less than half. By the way, i forgot to mention that the biohome is new.

pH measurements for today remained at 6.4(lights off) to 6.5(lights on)

    Re: Does Biohome increase pH?

After more than 1 month, ph remained higher at between ~6.4 and ~6.8. Minimal topup with water aged with peats. No addition of rocks and such and my gh is less than 3 and kh is less than 2. Dosing only old sea mud powder(3 flat scoops per week).

Would appreciate if anyone who is purchasing new biohome to test their before and after ph to verify if biohome will increase ph.

    Re: Does Biohome increase pH?

sorry to dig up such an old thread, but would like to share that i am facing the same problem as you bro.

i am also using biohome/bh+, ph has slowly creeped up to 7 since setup about 1 month ago.

    Re: Does Biohome increase pH?

    Thanks for your feedback!

Actually I changed soil recently. The soil is a mixture of africanna and amazonia. While I expect the ph to be around low 5+, the ph was measured to be 6.0 so I guess bio home do buffer the ph to a cerrtain extend.

Hope this information can help others who are resetting or starting their tank

Hi there, can you share more information like the ph before adding the media and after adding the media?
