Substitute for Eheim quick vac that's cheap?

I was in the pet store and saw quick vac. Seems very useful but I do not have cash to spend on that so I'm wondering if anyone knows a cheaper alternative or possible a DIY project? Thank you

I got a gravel vacuum cleaner for about 12 bucks. I forgot the brand though but it does it's work. Design is fairly similar to shadow's 2nd picture
