Hi there fellow fish enthusiasts! I am glad to find a very informative site.
I am currently setting up a 3ft planted tank and this forum makes my task easier. There were so many questions i had in my mind and was seeking help from everywhere but still not that informative. I guess i found this site just in the nick of time as i'll be shopping for my accessories this Saturday.
I hope to start a thread to post my progress as i venture into planted tanks. Planning to keep just 5 different kind of plants and neon tetras for the time being.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Ah shopping. I'm guessing you have pretty much done your research. Getting filtration system and CO2? I'll be heading down to Seaview next week instead for mine.

Nice to hear that you are doing 3ft too. I have no style defined yet but roughly have some ideas.
I have not started it yet. Tank is still wrapped in packaging. Got it from my church friend free of charge!!
Yeah, i have done so much research until my boss thought i become fisherman!
Seaview!!! That's exactly where i am going tomorrow. Will be getting gravel, filter system and some plants. Probably no CO2 as i'll be getting plants that are not light demanding. Fish maybe next week.
I will post my progress in another thread. Will let you know once i start the thread.

Hi welcome to AQ.
Make sure you do research first on the gravel/soil before you buy. There are many different type and brand. Different brand give different result. Substrate is the foundation of planted tank, do choose wisely.

Sounds good. Just my opinion, Shadow is right. The substrate is very important. Read about them here or google and get some guidance. Or you can always ask. I spent almost a month now only reading. Getting some stuffs here and there.
Tank Size
Dimension? 90 x 45 x 45 (cm)
Litres? Approx 180L
Substrate
If money is not an issue,
ADA Power Sand
ADA Amazonia New Normal
ADA Amazonia New Powder
Quantity depends on how much you want it to be. Cos you're doing a slope, you will need more aquasoil. If you're using above, there's no need for gravel. Personally, I skipped the power sand. Just using Amazonia normal. The powder is for the top part. To make it look more natural.
Other soil used are normal dirt with clay at the base. Gex Soil, ANS, Borneowild etc. Some using lapis but I have no experience with it.
Base Fert
ADA has it's 5 ferts you place at the base.
I'm not rich so I am using Borneowild instead. I'm also thinking of inserting JBL balls.
Filtration System
External canister or over hanging filter? Best to go for external. Eheim will be the brand you should look for. I'm using 2224. I do have a fluval C4 ohb but that is only for back up.
Co2 System
As you are not using Co2, flourish excel will be good for you. But using Co2 helps. If the cost is a deterrent, you can DIY. Search in forum or online for DIY. Youtube will show you how as well. The difference is that here we add baking soda to the mix. The states just use yeast, sugar and water. Cheap but probably last 2-3 weeks and you will need to do it again
Lighting
What lighting are you using? I have an Aquazonic Super Bright T5 4x39W 12,000k. Personally, it's too warm for my liking. Bring my water temperature up quickly. 30C is the highest.
Chilling
Chiller or fan? This is to bring your water temperature down. Some fishes do well between a certain temperature. And when they do well, they breed. To find out more about breeding of your fish, google it and it will tell you the temperature and PH level that your water needs to be. Chiller is good but expensive. If the room is air condition then it will help. The room temperature is important as it effects your aquarium. A fan is cheaper but will bring temperature down 1-3C
Water Conditioner
I'm using prime. There are so many other water conditioners like Nutrafin etc. Choose one.
Test Kit
To test your water perimeters. Ammonia, PH, nitrate, nitrite, GH, KH etc.
Plants
As you are not using Co2, research will be needed on the type of plants that are hardy and not demanding.
Driftwood and Rocks
Well, you know what they are for.
Liquid Fertilizers
There are various. But I keep seeing the members using ADA and Borneowild. These are daily doses.
Fish
The fish you get are important. Do research before getting them. Neon Tetras are good schooling fish. I love them.
For a start, I think you're putting in the fish way too early. You need to allow the fish tank to cycle.
here's my err...setup.
The main tank where my project is focus now. Nothing in it. I did play with it a little. Below tank will be another setup, probably with driftwood. I have another 3ft tank actually, want to get rid of it and get a 2ft instead. The small tank is my quarantine / breeding tank etc.

My tank is also 90x45x45 (cm)
Am planning to get AquaSonic 4x39W as well. Any idea about the price? Me currently on a tight budget.

Less than 100. But if you're the very patient kind, members do sell away stuffs in the Ads section.
My setup will be done next week. My only problem now or rather two problems is the rocks and plants.

An update to my shopping this Saturday.
1) T5HO 56K 39Wx2 Lighting
2) HELP Japanese advanced soil (specifically meant for plants)
3) Eheim Liberty Filter
I was planning to get canister but way beyond my budget. Have yet to set up my tank.

curious, what make you choose HELP Japanese advanced soil ?
Well it was more of a coaxing by the helper at seaview. Also noticed that thier tanks were all stocked with HELP. Read reviews about that soil and i think it helps me kickstart with planted tanks. I hope i'm correct with the choice?
Very pricey soil i would say. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Still intending to get more lighting though T5HO 39w x2 should suffice.
My plants mostly would be java fern, moss and water sprite.
I can't comment on HELP soil because never try it. To me the best soil for planted tank still ADA. How much does HELP soil cost for pack of 8kg or 9l?
For 8l, it was $31 before 15% discount.
Hi edge80, it's a God's blessing to have a free tank from your church friend and I am in the midst of looking for one. Infact my colleague got a 3ft tank similar to this http://singapore.gumtree.sg/c-Stuff-...AdIdZ359076550 but he's not been using it for more than say 7 years so I do not know if it's still ok to put in water with all the substrate etc. If I take it home and later leakage occur then is bad.
I am also reading on the plant tank setup and currently I have a free co2 tank from another friend so now left with filter & lights and of cos a tank before I can proceed.
Hope to view your tank soon.
Much cheaper than ADA, also your plants is not a demanding plants.
