My OHF trays have pieces of black sponge in them, which I haven't checked in years. They get no light, hence no algae. The algae grows on the output tubes, basically the tubes where the water drips out from. They grow there since I made them turn outwards facing the aquarium light in the hood. I have green, brown and occasionally white? algae in the tubes. I'll take a pic and let you see.

The brown stuff you have in the tubes of the canister filter is brown algae, which is normal.

I've heard of stories where people claim that Biohome may cause pH to rise but I guess it's alright since you are keeping Rift Lake cichlids in that tank.

Another thing you might want to consider is placing the media in the sump in filter bags. That way you can easily remove them as and when required, in case you have a change of ideas on what media to use.

The output tubes of my OHF trays in the hood, just pictured 3 out of the 5 tubes:

Last tube has a small plant growing there, probably a fern or something, must have been a spore in the air, or from the plants in the tank. Either way it looks cool.

Cool ! Let's hope that the small plant in the last picture develop and cover your water outlet, then it look even more natural

Still reading up on the DIY page. May have some factors to consider cause I am considering for both my cichlids and planted tank.

May be more tricky for planted, cos' algae scrubber will absorb nitrate and phosphate from the water.

Yes, presently my media all in bags except the ceramic rings cos' I arrange in such a way that all water passing from comp A to B will go thru' it.
