If you planted heavily but did not provide CO2, it's a high chance the algae will out-compete the plants. Adding the CO2 and removing as much of the algae manually might help somewhat. Increased water flow within the tank also helps.
Recently replanted my 4-footer. I had replanted it heavily and not using CO2. To my horrors, the tank became an algae farm...![]()
Brown algae and green powder algae took over the glass, BGA took over my HC and crypts. Black algae took over my nanas, green hair algae grew on my hygrophilas and some slimy green algae took over whatever that grow to the water surface.Introduced starlights, cherry shrimps, colour shrimps, nerites etc and only managed to successfully get rid of the brown algae...
Is the algae explosion caused by over crowding of plants?
Do I really need to introduce CO2 to get rid of the algae?
Help?![]()

I'm crypt collecting... Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted!), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted!
), C.tonkinensis(Melted!
), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii
Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...

Fish.. Simply Irresistable
Back to Killies... slowly.
Shuckz... Was thinking of using CO2... Seems like I have no choice...

How many watt is your light?
4 x T5HO... So, that is 220W?

Algae themselves are plants too. They have the natural 'right' to exist in water. If you want to exclude Algae in a tank, you must set aside dedicated time to remove them on a regular basis. UV light should work for simple-celled 'green water' Algae. Hair Algae and the like have to be removed physically. It's hard work, but every gardener can tell you it's hard work tackling wild weeds.
LIFE IS UNBEARABLE WITHOUT A FISH TANK!!!
If you don't want to inject CO2, you need to lower your light. Otherwise plant will stunt and algae take over. I never have 4ft tank, so I do not know what is the estimate light for non Co2 injection tank.
Very strong lights no co2 will invite algae easily when the tank is not established.
Good lighting you have for a co2 enriched place.
