It was an awesome feeling when the rams's eggs hatched. Now the frys are wiggling in the 20x20x23 small tank.

Now my headache is what is a suitable size of tank i need to get for them?

Hello there, I don't know whether you still remember me, but I collected the guppies and tetra from you about 2 weeks ago. So you got the german blue ram from Jacky and they have spawned already? Your tank is much bigger than mine. My fry is only in a small size guppy tank now. Started with about 100 of them, now left about 18 two-month old fry.

Yes i do remember. Actually its my wife who got the rams. brought her to jack's shop. She saw the rams and when she heard that they can lay eggs, she bought them.

Its day 3 for my fry. Hope they will be free swimming soon. Some perished along the way.

It is quite normal that some won't make it pass the first few days. You can start feeding them food now. My fry are quite choosy and will only take live food so I feed them microworm and baby brine shrimp. They will ignore the fry powder food and I believe that was why some of fry can't make it as the uneaten food fouls the water. Actually, you can just put any plant in the tank with the fry as there are actually micro-organism that the fry can feed on too.

Hi Aquanoob, I still counting more that 100 fry in the tank and the parents are very agreesive. They will attack anything that goes into the tank. Now using chopsticks.

Lost a few fry to my filter as they got sucked in due to their curiosity and small size. Now i have another problem is the leftover food. Thinking of putting a yamato in to clear the rubbish. Any experience with yamato and the rams?

If you are going to use a scavenger, do not use shrimps. The Ram parents are capable of killing any small snails or shrimp. Use Apple Snails if you have them.

Good, observe GC tank and you'd notice they have some kinda netty thingy on their filter, they sells it, get one and net the filter water inlet. Either that or you can find a sponge to prevent "capturing" of fries. Make sure there is little space for the little ones to hide as well.

Go get a black cloth, surround the tank with the cloth for the time being, use clothes pack to pack it. On top of fish tank, have a cover, to prevent lizard from preying on the fries. Usually they will be kept calm. Use your two fingers to light tap the tank each time you do feeding, so that the parents and the kids get used to the vibration, and will know you are trying to feed them, this way, they wouldn't get shock easily. You have to train them to get use to this...takes time. After a few weeks, the little ones should get bigger.

The black sponge pre-filters from the Gush line is quite fine in pore size, so they are pretty safe for use with fry. Simple alternative is to rig up a air-powered sponge filter in the breeding/nursery tank.

What filter are you using on this tank? 20 x 20 x 23 is quite small to raise them all to maturity. A 2 ft tank gives ample space for them to grow, if you want to maximise survival rates.

recently noticed the female ram deliberately taking in more pallet food, and spit it out in much smaller pieces.

The female Ram does this so that the fry can feed on the smaller bits. Often, many Ram females are lousy parents, along with the males. I think you are very lucky you have a good female.

After much tender loving care, my fry finally grew into adults. only 13 of them survived. The original parents died though.
