You can always get those plastic tanks for $2 from any LFS.

First of all, decide between guppy and bettas. You are pretty flicker minded at this point, because you are asking about breeding instead of upkeep of both fishes.
Secondly, you fall in love without any data on your target, how can?
So read up more. Uncle Google is your friend.

From this point, understand Bettas where is originate from. Understand genre, what kinda water quality would they prefer, what kinda living environment do they prefer.
Once you are comfortable with keeping them, then you move up to the next phase - Breeding.
For this, youtube is your friend. And you will find a lot of live examples just on betta breeding itself.
yoyouyi, I can only tell you, you need to do a lot of homework first.
Once you are reading to move in to rear bettas, zoom in the area which you live. Look at how many LFS (Local Fish Shop) are near to you. Visit and see which one has the most betta supplies.

Betta need space.![]()
For adult bettas, use those 10 cm/ 15 cm cube tanks. Called betta "condo". Get them from breeders selling them. But then again, breeders usually use atleast a S sized GEX tank to house them. Why? These fish are prone to ammonia poisoning and can cause damage to their fin (especially the halfmoon bettas) . NEVER put them in those small containers.
For betta fries, can put them in those SU containers (those large containers to put festive cookies), get the largest size available. The container is meant to separate the fries with good finnage/ good gene ones from the culled ones.
Picture for sample. Taken from google
Please do your homework before committing. I've seen breeders who stopped halfway and fries about 100+ gone just like that.
In a nutshell, if you keeping them just for fun, with no breeding them intended, just house them in those GEX S/M/L tanks. Doesn't cost more than $30.
Advice from boss Felix
Toyogo type of containers also can, big one.
Ikea sell the pepper and salt glass container with a stainless cover which cost about 3-5 bucks for pack of 3, i tried keeping my betta in these container before.
There are those food containers but generally betta lives in padi rice like field, just imagine a small long kang, which stretches in km and km...measure in hectares. Hence a bigger space rather than a very confine small glass tank. Popular have a smaller than 1 ft size toyogo like plastic containers selling at $8.90, it will cost you less if you are popular member. Again, do not commit, go take a look first. Once you ready then go and buy it.
Alternative to this, I would encourage you to goto Yishun Aquastar, spanning 5 units, goto the last unit to look at the tanks there. 1 unit is one shophouse.
Hi,
Just my thoughts about keeping bettas.
Bettas comes from shallow waters and as mentioned rice paddies, shallow ponds and slow moving streams.
I'm sorry but I don't quite agree with keeping bettas in those small tanks we see at some petstore. Yes, sure they live in this shallow waters but there are ample room to swim even during dry seaasons. During wet seasons, they have lots of space to move about.
I for one hate seeing bettas kept in those small tanks. I don't even call them tanks. It's a container you get from ikea to put fake flowers in. Go to such petstore and tell me how this fish look. Happy? You see them very lethargic and not showing their natural behaviour.
Keeping them in vases with plants is also very idiotic. Roots die; ammonia in water. Ammonia is toxic to fish.
They are labyrinth fish. They swim up to the surface to breathe air. You place plants how to breathe? They don't eat the roots of the plant in the wild, only in desperation. They mainly eat insects, insects larvae like mosquito.
Can betta survive (the word here is survive) in small containers? Yes they can but should they? It's like you asking me, can I live in a one room flat? Sure I can survive but I will definitely be happier in a 4-5 room.
Don't put mirrors on the side of tanks. This is my own opinion only and you might not agree but I like to see bettas in a minimum 10 gallon tank. Don't cover the top of tank as they need to breathe. If you're keeping more than one in same tank, suggest hiding places. They may or may not co-exist. If keeping in same tank, minimum 3.
Haha. I sound angry. Sorry i went to a petstore recently and I feel so sad about them in their condition. Firstly, they are shipped in small bags. Enduring temperature fluctuations and all. and then now in petstore they swim in their own poo. And one or two died. They don't look happy. Check youtube for those keepers who keeps and breed them in bigger tanks.
Bettas are really nice fish. Study them more before commiting.
Cheers.

^^Y I do keep bettas at a time until they die of old age, I kept them in my community tank, planted 2 ft. They would swim gracefully in it. So give the fish some space and they will dance for you. So VS is bringing out a very valid point here. Do read up on the link I posted above at #3 and you'd learnt more about bettas before diving into breeding. Learn to keep them well, good looking and healthy first. There is always the first step.
Omg i love bettas dun keep them in small conrainers
I keep mine in a 4 gallon gex m tank w internal filter and he is super active.. In contrast like the bro said earlier those bettas u see at lfs all look super sian only sitting at the bottom of the tank waiting to die. V v sad. If i could i would love to move mt betta in a 10 gallon tank
Dun keep a betta in a small container just cos its cheap. Bettaa are amazinggg fish and should be treated better. When my betta hD internal parasites my friends say jyst let it die cos a new fish is cheaper than medication.. They said the same thing agaun when it had anchor worms... Pls make sure u are able to give it a good home and can take care of it before u can buy the fishhh
