peat moss filtration: how does it work?

how does this work? do I just add peat moss in the canister? or maybe peat moss in the substrate?

Hi,

I think what you should use peat granules, they are less messy. Put them in a media bag and into your canister.
Some folks prefer to just put the bag near the filter outlet, unsightly, but much easier to remove once the desired pH / water hardness is achieved.

Having peat moss as a substrate only works if you intend to grow some plants like Crypts, in emersed form, or breed fishes like killies. You do not need to have it in the substrate.

Like what Eric has pointed out, most people utilise the granular form like Sera Peat or Eheim Ehfitorf in fine meshed filter bags, positioned close to the output of the filters or in the filters themselves. The drawback to using peat as a chemical media is that it will stain the water brown.

For me, i used Terminalia catappa leaves to lower the ph as it works faster than peat moss.
